As we all know, Korean police here are about as useless as *beep* on a bull.
That being said, each major police station has an "International Crimes Division". The definition of an "International" crime includes any misdemeanor commited by a non Korean. This includes visa issues (really an immigration issue). Anyway the police in this division, are different to the other clowns, they actually do work, they actually do make an effort to track down crims.
In compiling the stats, remember the police are much more vigilant against non Koreans.
Secondly, Korean smacks, foreigner. Foreigner charged with assault. There's one foreign crime alreasy added to the stats. |

| Yup, I concur as well. Korean police couldn't catch the clap in a whorehouse on Saturday night. And that goes twofold for the Korean press. |

I wonder how the Asian community would react to a picture like this if it were printed in a newspaper back home?
Reason number 326 why Korea is light years from being a normal country.

What about when a Danish newspaper printed that prophet whats-his-name and was reacted to with not only the Danish flag being burned, but other European flags being burned in protests too!
I can't imagine the BBC in the UK ever attaching a cartoon to a news story like that. IMAGINE the uproar! |

That's a little different since the cartoons in question were critiquing the legacy of a religious leader and those who interpreted his message as one of violence and intolerance. Religion, being a movement with a set of rules and guidelines for behaviour can and does influence the way people act and thus is a fair game for a ribbing. Race, on the other hand, is a social construct that barely exists outside people's minds, a superficial difference, that in no way plays a part in the way people behave, save for perhaps a few irrelevant biological adaptations. |

If it isn't bad enough with REAL (and imagined) scapegoating of foreign teachers, we have the fictionalized accounts on TV adding to the heap: the Cheaters-ripoff "Scandal" had a recent episode where the wife was married to a foreigner, and they caught him in bed with a student. Let's play count the sterotypes.... |

Thank you for illustrating my point. This picture makes most of us feel uncomfortable and to that end I will leave it up a while longer. It's as bad as the cartoon in question, however I doubt we will see anyone protest that. I'm just hoping Komerican can come along and tell us it's OK for the Korean press to do so because of their years of oppression at the hands of the Japanese. |
