Last night I was coming home, chatting with the driver in Korean. Standard questions, where you from, what do you do, do you like Korea, do you have a boyfriend? No big deal. Perfectly pleasant conversation. Not unlike countless conversations I've had before with taxi drivers.

Then...

"Do you sleep with your boyfriend?"

"What?" He repeated himself, and still thinking I must be hearing things, I said, "I don't understand."

He then proceeded to start detailing--with noises and weird...body...movements--what he was saying.

I dropped to Banmal and said, "You are very rude!" and got out at the next stoplight without paying him.

WTF?

Oh my...taxi drivers. I eally can't stand most of them. I say "JUST DRIVE"!!!!!!!! would you, and DON'T speak to me. I have no desie to answer your nosey questions. I know it must get boring driving but that is your job. Don't use me for your entertainment, free Englsih practice, etc. Also, please don't ask me for my phone number and tell me you are 47. Where is your wife????? The only good thing is, if I feel like speaking, I can pratcice my Korean. But usually, I don't care to speak to taxi drivers.

Me and my gf were walking along one day and some 40ish lower middle classed Korean guy asked her "Is he your sex partner?"

Remember the cab driver that picked up the 19 year old American GI woman at Inchon airport and raped her? He beat the charges because the judge wasn't fully convinced it wasn't consensual. Because the first thing a 19 year old American woman wants to do after a 12 hour flight is get her some 50 year old ajusshi gochu.

This judge must not have a daughter. Wait, did you say American girl? Oh, never mind, she wasn't Korean.

It's sad, and truly reflective of what I really think of Korea, but your story did not surprise me in the least.

Well, do you sleep with your boyfriend?

Okay, seriously: funny story. He didn't chase you when you left?
Also, how do you say "you are very rude" in Korean?

I usually like taxi drivers, and have had a few good chats. Sometimes though, yeah, not great. Reasonably priced though, usually.

The last interesting taxi conversation I had was a few years ago in Seoul. Driver spoke decent English and told me how he had been laid off from his job at one of the banks because of the "IMF". Dude claimed he used to be a manager in charge of investments, funds, etc.

Met another guy while getting my Korean license. He was trying to get his bus-driver's license and was working as a taxi driver to support himself, his family who lived over in Washington state, and finance his Amway dreams. Both sad cases.

Favorite weird taxi conversation:

Me: I have sunglasses on. It is bright sunny day in December.

Taxi Driver: Very agitated and starts talking to me in Korean about my eyes and bad light.

Me: As I had been here all of a month I had no idea what he was talking about. I recognized eye and light and those were the only words I knew. So apologized and stopped talking.

Taxi Driver: Pulls over. Reaches over the seat and takes off my sunglasses and tells the me: bad bad. eyes bad. winter.

Me: Freaked out first cuz I thought he was going to smack me or something and then realized what he was talking about and burst out laughing.

The rest of the trip was in sullen silence. I didn't mean to laugh but damn he scared me and all of this because I was wearing sunglasses.

My boss sagely listens to the story and says well Miss Jade you know sunglasses are for summer not winter. Your eyes will get weak if you wear sunglasses in the winter. The sun is not strong in the winter so you shouldn't worry about wearing sunglasses.

Mind you this was about 6.5 years ago. Still brings a smile to my face.

Jade
