Anyone can be randomly killed in South Africa. All you have to do is be white, or look like you have some money.
Trick is to slow down way before the traffic lights go red, or speed through if they go red as you hit them.
Its less likely every day that they will hold the world cup in SA |

Sigh...there they go again...the scaremongering whites who like to pretend crime is something that mostly affects them...
Sorry buddy , not even close...as UN statistics showed , 98 % of crime in South Africa happens to poor black people living in shanty towns...and of the violent crime involved 80% knew the person who carried out the crime .....so it's hardly "random" as you say ....in fact put these stats into perspective and you will see that living in south africa if you are a white person is safer than many parts of the U.S.A...so spare me the tears @sshole !! ....it's socio-economic and it's total scaremongering nonsense to pretend we are too scared to stop at traffic lights or that crime is even on the top 100 things white south african in any real effect think of on a day to day basis (except when some foriegner is listening and you think you can get some cheap shots in at the black government )...uh uh buddy...I aint buying !
We live in the most part fantastic lives of luxury.....beach houses , getting fat off meat on the braai and swigging away happily at our favourite rum cocktails.......spare me the bollocks...
(By the way lucky dube was a fanstastic musician.....Easily marleys equal...you all ought to check him out...try youtube and the tracks slave , house of exile , prisoner and many many others ) |

Granted, it affects all ethnicities...but a report found that race-hate was a significant factor in attacks on whites, not to mention that they are viewed as having money etc.

Sure, but 98% is because blacks make up around 98% of the population. its like saying 99% of crime in korea happens to Koreans". Uh,Duh!

Reassuring argument you're giving there "Everyone dies a violent death in South Africa including whites", Great! Murder is an equal opportunity employer now, racism has been eradicated.
you're living in an ivory tower. the denial will end eventually and you will be reduced to something like the tiny minority of doomed whites left in Zimbabwe. Game was up for the white man in Africa years back.

Whites weigh comfort and race in new South Africa

The fear of crime, affirmative action, lost privilege, a government deemed hostile - is one factor behind an exodus of whites ...Since apartheid ended 13 years ago, the white population has fallen by a quarter, according to the South African Institute of Race Relations.
Wian, still in 11th grade, already wants to move overseas, too, despite a comfortable upper-middle-class life. "I just don't think we can survive here," he said. "It feels like the blacks in this country are trying to get us to leave."
At the moment, departing whites far exceed the trickle of returnees. The unknown - and unknowable - question is how these trends may shift as today's youngsters grow up and decide where and how to live.
Frans Cronje, who researched white emigration for the race relations institute, predicts that the current course may well continue. His analysis disputes official figures, suggesting that a smaller 14 percent drop in the white population occurred mostly in the early 1990s. Ominously, he says, many who have left lately are just in their 20s and 30s.
"We've created this rainbow nation, but a lot of that rainbow is running away," he said. "Fifty years in the future, South Africa's white population could be 2 or 3 percent of the national population. I'd be surprised if it was that much."
On the surface, it's hard to see why the Prinsloos would feel anything but content. They have a large home filled with nice things. Willem Prinsloo is a well-paid orthopedic surgeon; his wife, Riana, keeps the practice's books. Wian attends one of the best high schools around. His older brother Dirk, 20, studies at the University of Pretoria.
Their high standard of living mirrors the good fortunes of many whites. Their pessimism also mirrors white attitudes. Only 45 percent of whites feel positive about the country's future, according to a poll by TNS Research Surveys - well below the 75 percent of blacks who do.
A major factor is crime. South Africa's murder rate is eight times that of the U.S., with 50 killings a day. Most victims are poor and black, but violent crimes, including carjackings and home invasions, are common in largely white areas. In March, 70 percent of whites living in big cities told pollsters that crime had gotten worse.
Wian and his mother were held up at gunpoint in a hotel room while vacationing in Cape Town. In Pretoria, crime has hit close to home. A friend of Riana Prinsloo was shot to death last year, and this year the 23-year-old son of one of Willem Prinsloo's colleagues was murdered outside his home.
"You hear about these things all the time," said Wian.
The danger rules their lives, said his brother, Dirk: "You never go out alone. If we stay out late we try to go in a group, drive in the same car." Thanks to the electric fence and other security measures, "your house feels like a jail. I don't even know my neighbor's name."

My buddy Mark studied in South African for a semester. There were 30 people in his program from all over the world, but most of them were white. All but ONE had a crime committed against them. One was car-jacked at knifepoint and robbed at gunpoint (she was white, by the way).
If 29/30 people had at least one crime committed against them in a SEMESTER, then what the hell US city are you thinking compares???? |

Ye its really terrible what happened to Lucky Dube.
To the above poster: My biggest reason for leaving South Africa (and being hesitant to return) is crime. Fortunatly none of my friends or family members have been murdered, but I have run out of fingers and toes to list the amount of relatives or friends who have been victims of violent crime in the past few years.
My father and I were hijacked a few years ago and taken hostage for over an hour, while their probes for information were coupled with violent threats.
Crime for the most part is colourblind, does that make me feel any better? No. |

No..about 74% are black . 14% are white....so 2% of the so called 50 murders a day (a made up number , but lets use the worse case scenario) happen to white people . Not got a calculater handy but that's less than 365 white people killed a year . Out of 6 million . I'm sorry ...even in it's most inflated , exagerated number the odds are very very tiny of this ever happening to you .

There is PLENTY of petty crime in South Africa . But even given that , this example seems extreme . Mark is obviously the type of person who likes to make a story more "colorful" ...i bet when he travelled to cambodia he also shot a cow with a bazooka and threw hand grenades into chicken coups....* rolls eyes .
You don't live in South Africa . I do . Let me tell you how it really is . I have never met anyone....or have one close friend who has EVER known anyone personally who was a victim of violent crime .
I have heard of murders happening frequently in townships ..results of drunken knife fights , gang wars etc etc ....but for a white south african very likely living in the suburbs to paint such a bleak picture of his life , is ridiculous... the great majority ...like 90% live very well . For them to portray the country as if getting murdered is a real possibility , rather than a really , really freak case ...then they are already starting to lie .
Other inconvenient facts ...crime in south africa has decreased the past 4 years...but ask many white south africans and they will tell you "oh its getting worse everyday" ......also crime happens to tourists one half a % more than it happens to tourists in Australia.....half a percent....that's a fact....so sorry to pee on your parade and your little racist agenda , but those are the facts folks.....get a tissue and cry about it ...
I really wish they would shut up about it...they dont have any credibility discussing a phenomena which affects poor black people when I know fully well how we all have a laugh , drink and eat and travel and live a life a pretty great care free life....so you not fooling me . |

My lucky dubes came from Thailand. Finished holiday, came home, unpacked a shirt to wash it and two doobs fell out!! I'd totally forgotten about them, it was nice to have a puff in Korea, but, really, I spent the next few days telling myself...you are one lucky idiot!!! |

I don't believe you.
I'm not sure you even live in south africa. if you do, then you are the first (1st) one I've knwn to make that statement.
Or maybe you live in a bubble. Obviously one of the numerous residential compounds that is protected by armed guards and electric fences? the one that you only leave when absolutely necessary, such as travelling to the next town maybe. Quite the sense of normality?
Lets see. I have relatives in Natal,OFS, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. The ones in natal: Shot dead an armed intruder in their house. My cousin-in-law was murdered by assaillants. My 2 cousins worked for the ambulance service but gave it up because they got shot at while trying to save the lives of people who were themselves victims of gangs, after which one has since emigrated to England.
The ones in OFS: have mostly emigrated in the past 10 years, their neighbouring farmer was murdered.
The ones in Cape town: Had 1 friend abducted and killed, another stabbed nearly to death in the street.
The ones in Johannesburg: Live in a guarded residential complex like you presumably do. Of them, the ones that don't, have no less than 2 high elctrified fences surrounding their property, installed after their home was broken into by armed robbers with them narrowly escaping.
And then I have plenty more stories from friends or people I met when I was there. Maybe thats why they all carry handguns either round their waist or under the car seat?
To be honest dude I'm quite sympathetic. Its a wonderful country, and its lousy the state it is being reduced to. But pretty please, don't pretend that there are not serious safety risks, generally way above most if not all other western countries...over and out. |

Of course there are safety issues . There are in any country in the world .Yes , my house is int he suburbs like 95% of all white south africans....yes it's well protected....but , no ...my quality of life has not suffered at all . I go boating , play sport for my local club ..go to nightclubs , bars , hiking , eating out etc etc etc...as does almost everyone I know and never worry about crime...(I live in the eastern cape ,..the poorest part of the country)..I've never seen any violent crime commited ...and it;s certainly never happened to anyone I know .....
That's the simple facts...you posted some horror story above (and of course I feel terrible for your families losses) ..but it's a freak /freak case.......far too many people are killed in south africa , but it's just not close to the level people would have you believe ...if you are white you are mostly very safe and have very little cause for complaint ....
Most people seem to make out as if they drive to work through a wall of bullets ...driving over dead corpses on the streets and swerving to not hit hijackers...bullshit man....south africa is a perfectly functional and safe place for a middle classed person to live...and anyone who is telling you otherwise either doesn't have his facts straight , or is fearmongering with an agenda to lad you to believe the black government can't do it;s job..... |
