Here I am sick at home all weekend. I was hoping for some reprieve from the week's harsh news. So I turned to news from home, hoping to find some feel-good down home soul-warming story.

But instead, WTF comes on my screen but this:

Man exposed himself online to step-granddaughter
Court
RACHEL MENDLESON

When she realized her step-grandfather was exposing himself with his web-camera during their online chat, the then 13-year-old minimized the window on her computer. A few seconds later, this message appeared: "He, he, he, I hope you liked what you saw."

The 55-year-old Halifax man was sentenced in Halifax Supreme Court yesterday for willfully exposing his genitals to the underage girl.

He was due to stand trial for four additional charges, which included sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching, child luring and sexual interference between 1998 and 2005. The Crown withdrew those charges after assessing the evidence and determining what was in the best interest of the victim.

After pleading guilty to the single charge, he received a six-month conditional sentence and two years of probation. He must also supply a DNA sample so he can be added to the Sexual Offender Information Registry, and must visit the East Coast Forensic Hospital to determine if he is a candidate for sexual-offender treatment.

The former military man was getting ready for work, teaching English at a university in Asia on Dec. 20, 2005, when the incident occurred. His wife was living overseas with him at the time.

He was arrested at the Halifax airport when he returned to Canada in June 2006 after being contacted by police.

The Crown and the defence were in agreement about the majority of the sentence, but were conflicted on whether to impose house arrest for the duration of his conditional sentence.

Defence lawyer Jean Morris argued that it would be difficult for her client to make a living while under house arrest. He currently recruits university students to teach English overseas. Morris said he works irregular hours, barely making ends meet.

"The sentence is more than plenty deterrent for what has taken place," she said, pointing out that a fine and probation are the usual punishments for indecent exposure in a public place.

But in the end, Justice Joseph Kennedy sided with the Crown.

Although he commended the convicted for admitting his guilt, the severity of the offence, he said, could not be overlooked.

"Willful exposing of male genital organs to a female child is the sexual exploitation of that child," he said.

"If you should ever expose yourself or sexually exploit a child again, the next time you will be exposing yourself will be in a federal institution. Don't forget that."
