For me, while Koreans -- especially men -- seem to look as xenophobic, invasive, and untrusting as ever when I am in public, I cant say it has affected me (yet).

Some, for example, complain that they are being required to submit criminal background checks. Others are saying people are talking behind their backs. Bosses asking teachers why they became ESL teachers at just this moment. Stuff like that.

I would say the vast majority of people would answer 'no'.

Can't say it has. Only person who I have discussed it with (Korean) is a university-aged friend of mine, and I brought it up.

if any koreans mentions it to me.. I will remind him of the korean psycho who went into a kindergarten and slaughted more than 10 children with a axe! left a blood bath in there..
or the korean guy who chopped up the 4 year old boy living next door and keep his body parts in the fridge!
or maybe Ill mention the story of the child abusers who have kidnapped and kept prisoner in their homes and have pimped little girls out to their friends... I can usually shut a korean up in a matter of minutes if he tries to make foreigners look bad and koreans superior...

their are sickos everywhere.. and plenty of KOREANS in American who have committed serious crimes.. do I need to mention Virgina tech..

also there is no proof that Neil did any abuse here.. he might have saved it for his trips to cambodia, or thailand.. he probably knew this is not the place for his sick urges.. so never even tried it..

When I first came here three years ago, I was a superstar. People stopped me on the street to say hello to me all the time. Anything I did, playing a video game, volleyball on the beach, a few swings in the bating cage, turned into a spectator sport. People ate it up and I was by no means awesome at any of these activities. I loved it.

Over the last few years I have noticed a decline in my star appeal and an increasing level of resentment. I think resentment towards English teachers in general has been on the rise. Has anyone else noticed this?

That being said, I have still recieved a steady stream of "hello"s and have witnessed many a parent and grandparent push thier children to go and talk to me. Since this Neil incident, I haven't had any parent push thier child to talk to me and have recieved a lot of concerned looks fom parents (ie walking through E-mart.) Has anyone else noticed this?

At this point, it's 6-0. Criminal checks have been going on for a while now, so it would be hard to say how much affect this newest incident will have on future checks.

From what I can tell, PJ was into buying sex with young boys. I've never heard of that in Korea, but maybe the pay-for-sex crowd here can fill us in on the details of that. It doesn't seem to be a big business here, like it is in SE Asia.

I do expect a criminal background check will soon become routine when applying for a job. I see nothing wrong with that. It's a legitimate precaution. Will it catch everyone? No, but that's no reason not to do it. It could at least reduce the incidence and that's all to the good.

I feel that way too.... like, generally, English teachers are less popular than they were a couple of years ago. But, it could just be that I've gotten to know more Koreans/about Koreans in that time to see the truth more clearly, too...
