Well, got my new LCD last night....works great. But, my poor old XBox running XBMC just can't handle playing HD stuff. It has served me well for 4 years!!

So, I've read that Apple TV's are easily hacked which lets you stream just about any file over a network. It will play 720p HD stuff with ease, apparently.

On the Korean Apple Store, they are running 319,000 for a 40GB version. Hard drive isn't really an issue as all videos would be streamed over the network hopefully.

Anyways, wondered if anyone has one and what you think of it. Would you recommend it as a media player for my HD stuff?? Think it's possible to pick one up used in Korea??

Try a DivX player much cheaper than Apple TV most will also play HD format up to 720p. http://abigs.com/ I have one of these models and I really love it.

The new divx players have wireless so you can access your computer. They normally have a harddrive in them they have both 2.5 and 3.5 models.

the one I have (eureka lx350) has a really easy to use menu will play up to 1080i (new ones will play 1080p)

Tvix make excellent multimedia hard drives and they are available in most decent electronic stores/markets in Korea. I've got a mini version with a 120GB hard drive and small remote, but if you're looking for something beefier, I would suggest this:

This plays virtually anything you can throw at it, it can be connected to your computer to play files directly from it, or through your router. it's also a USB host, which means you can connect other hard drives or flash drives to it and play content directly from them as well. You can also buy a PVR module for it at a small extra cost (it's a little gizmo that sticks in the back) and this means you can use it to record directly from TV as well. Price depends on the size of hard drive you have in it, but I think the 400/500GB PVR version goes for around 450,000 won. But there are numerous other cheaper/more expensive configurations and models all the way up to 1TB!!!! I'm dying to get one of these as soon as I get the cash together. Very reliable brand as well.

Playing MKV's seems to be a problem on both the Apple TV and the TIVX 5100.

The Apple TV isn't powerful enough to play 720p Matroska apparently, and the TIVX doesnt support Matroska (so i've read), you need to transcode them.

if you don't plan to put a hard drive in it, then you should be able to get the tvix for even less than the Apple, especially if you buy it online. This link to Enuri (comparative prices website in Korean) shows the various options. The price for the hard-drive less version seems to be in the 200-270,000 won region depending on whether you get the SA/HD version or the PVR add-on.

You asked about the menus. Yes, you can view them on the TV, very user friendly, English language option, can delete files directly from the machine.

Well, after reading tons of shit over at AVS Forums for the past few hours, I think the consensus is that the TIVX players are the best. The new M-4100SH and 5100SH are the way to go....Both are the same basically except for the 5100's aluminum case and garbage can design.

This is the way to go.....For the moment I don't need a hard drive as I have over 1TB of stuff on my server.

So I am going to pick one of these up....They are constantly working on the firmware to make it better and the community behind it is HUGE over at AVS!!!

Well, i bought a TVIX M-4100SH.....It's all hooked up and seems to work beautifully! The picture on my new TV is incredible!!! I have a bunch of HDDVD and BRDVD rips being downloaded right now!!

I ended up buying a 750GB hard drive with it. I figured with all the HD movies at 4-7GB each, it's going to fill up pretty quick.

The GUI leaves a bit to be desired.....It's nothing compared to XBMC, but I knew that going in. I upgraded the firmware to one of the latest releases and it plays 720p MKV files no problem at all, which is exactly what I want!!!

Unfortunately, TVIX just announced today that there is a new player to be released in the next couple of months. Kinda sucks that I just bought this one yesterday, as the next one will be more powerful allow for more filtering and other options. Ahh well.....

What was the total price you paid with the hard drive?

Bought the M-4100SH, 750GB hard drive, a HDMI cable and it came to 488,000won or something like that.....Just a little under 500 grand.

But it completes my system....well, not exactly cuz I don't have a sound system yet.

I think its worth it....I think without the hard drive it was around 275,000.
