I've only been here for a week and am starting to feel the pain of not being able to carry on a normal conversation in English or really be myself. My Korean co-teachers have been amazing and are very nice, so I don't mean this as a slight to them. One them is actually quite fluent.
Regardless... I've gone up to PNU (I'm walking distance) and down to Seomyeon and Haeundae. I just dont' know where to go when I get there. I'm not just going to walk up to every other white person that I see on the street and assume that they're going to want to speak to me, ha. Frankly, the few that I have seen walking around look like they forgot to smile when they hopped on their plane to Korea. Not to imply that I expect people to smile at me simply because "hey! I'm white too! OMG! FTW!", of course. It's just been grossly unfriendly and cold here so far. So... I'm discouraged. And today I cried in an internet cafe. It was totally pathetic. HELP! |

I got it. Thanks!
I'm in a much better mood now. I decided to stop being a lame ass and got off the computer when I was crying. I went home and cooked myself a delicious meal of rice and hotdog (lol) and beautified myself. I feel 100% better now. Thankfully my vanity wasn't lost on the plane. These moods will come and go, I know, but I got over the hump for today. Hopefully you do too!
That said, I'll still gladly take any advice anybody might have on Busan. |

Check out the Busan forums on Koreabridge.com and the calendar on pusanweb.com (they are sister sites). There are acuople of groups going on for different interests.
As for where to meet people in Haeundae, U2 is usually pretty full on the weekends and has a few people in it on week nights and most importantly, its easy to find. It's right across from the Novotel on Haeundae Beach. YOu can take bus 1003 straight to the beach or get off at hte Haeundae Subway stop and walk to hte beach from there. You can't miss the Novotel. It's huge and right next the paradise hotel. You might not notice peiople in Haeundae being outwardly friendly to otehr foreigners, but thats mainly b/c there are so many of us in Haeundae, we don't nod/say hi to everyone we meet. But just stop us and most of us are quite friendly. |

I'm also living near PNU and have been here for two months. It's only recently that I've met a group of fun foreigners to hang out with. I know exactly what you mean about the cold reception.
I'd love to hang out, but I can't figure out how to get in touch with you. This site won't let me PM until 25 posts... anyone know how to get around this? Maybe I'll just make an email that isn't my full name and post it up here. |

Rutherford, I just sent you a PM. Maybe you can respond to PMs that are sent to you? If not I will PM my email or something, to save either of us from getting random spam.
Thanks!
I'm actually closer to Dongnae than PNU, but eh... it's not really far at all, as i found out yesterday when I decided to walk it. I totally missed PNU and ended up in the next dong. Ha. |

Thank you, Kat! I'll check out both sites and keep that bit about Haeundae in mind. |

What's "full" mean exactly? |

Ah you're so lucky you're in Busan.. I used to take the train down there so I could hang out on weekends because it's got more going on than Daegu. It's also less polluted than Seoul, thanks to the sea air!
Go to the Monk's Jazz Club, Ol 55 and the Vinyl Underground in Kyungsundae. You'll meat tons of nice foreigners! If you're on Facebook check out this link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7145795999 . Say hi to Mike and Gino (singer and bass guitar), really nice guys! |

Suppose a person was not interested in other foreigners and in drinking or smoking. Suppose such a person sought a highly attractive fairly english proficient, native Busanian for a romantic relationship. Where would such a person seek this out? I have a feeling that's not something easily pulled off. Its either you're with the whitey's or you're alone, and the whitey's are mostly from canada and have a love affair with superficial small talk and alcohol. |

Small talk is quite painful. Booze makes it only slightly more tolerable. |
