US Lawmakers Apologize In Torture Case
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer
Thu Oct 18, 6:14 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Members of Congress apologized Thursday to a Canadian engineer seized by U.S. officials and taken to Syria, where he was tortured.

Maher Arar said he was ensnared in an "immoral" terrorism-fighting program known as extraordinary rendition.

The 37-year-old appeared before a joint hearing of House subcommittees by video from Ottawa, Canada.

He remains on a U.S. government "watch" list.

"Let me personally give you what our government has not: an apology," said Rep. Bill Delahunt, D-Mass., as he opened the hearing. "Let me apologize to you and the Canadian people for our government's role in ... a mistake."

Arar said he was grateful for the apologies, but hoped the Bush administration would do so, too Idea

"Let me be clear: I am not a terrorist, I am not a member of al-Qaida or any terror group. I am a father, a husband, and an engineer. I am also a victim of the immoral practice of extraordinary rendition," he said.

Arar said he was thrown in a tiny cell and tortured into falsely confessing that he had trained at a terrorist camp in Afghanistan.

"Life in that cell was hell. I spent 10 months and 10 days in that grave," he said.

If if if ... ???

What of these two REAL cases Joo?

What pro-CIA spin can you offer on these? We're waiting.

Know of any other rendition / kidnapping cases where these criminal thugs have clearly overstepped the line? Have any others been in the news?

What of Guantanamo? Have they actually FOUND any of the 911 conspirators yet? Has it been shut down?

Yes, detainees CAN speak to their lawyers, no ... they can't Rolling Eyes

btw - How does the old line "but i was only following orders" work as a legal defense these days?

I know they got this guy in Italy.

Of course the US needs to take care to protect innocents.

Gitmo is where Al Qaeda supporters caught in Afghanistan are.

The trials would have already started except for objections to miltary trials.

But anyone the US justice system can't handle Al Qaeda. So most of what the US has been doing is ok.

The Patriot act doesn't go far enough.

Also keep Jeff Rense supporters from getting US visas.

I think the term is military tribunals, not trials.

And the Patriot Act is screwed for what it's done to American citizens. If the act should go further, it needs to focus on non-citizens. It is already being abused by law enforcement and being used against citizens not in the scope of it's intended purpose.

Here is another big "IF". If only the US (and Britain) had not overthrown the democratic government in Iran in 1953.......

Enabling Act of 1933
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enabling_Act_of_1933

In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didnt speak up because I wasnt a Communist;

And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didnt speak up because I wasnt a trade unionist;

And then they came for the Jeff Rense supporters, And I didnt speak up because I wasnt a Jew;

And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

probably not.

Khomeni was more capable than others. Others didn't have his standing and /or they weren't as ruthless.

You are correct that was a big mess up.

The US messed more than a few times during the cold war . Nevertheless it was the right thing to do.

Obviously, the US government has far better relations with Syria than they want us to believe if they send people to be tortured there.
