Funny, nowhere in this article does it mention 650,000 Iraqi civilian deaths, nor does it put the blame on the U.S. military...or "multinational force".

Quote:
Condemning rising violence in Iraq, UN envoy urges fresh thinking

Amb. Ashraf Qazi
4 February 2007 Reacting against rising bloodshed in Iraq, the senior United Nations envoy there today called on the country's people to display the far-sighted leadership needed to find a way out of the current crisis.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Representative, Ashraf Qazi, condemned in the strongest terms the upsurge in violence in Iraq which targeted innocent civilians in popular markets and universities.

In a statement released by his office in Baghdad, Mr. Qazi said, This seemingly unending cycle of violence killed and wounded hundreds of Iraqi civilians in Al-Sadriyah area in Baghdad, Al-Maktabat market in Al-Hillah and Kirkuk.

The envoy called on Iraqi leaders and citizens to exhibit fresh thinking in the face of the violence that is tearing their society to pieces.

Welcoming the statement by Grand Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani calling on all to remember the fundamental unity of Islam and the need to close ranks in defence of civilized values and the future of the country, Mr. Qazi stressed the primary role of Iraqis in preventing further bloodshed.

However strongly the international community seeks to help in the current situation, Iraq's future health depends on wise, far-sighted and courageous leadership that could bring Iraq's factions together in mutual understanding of a way out of the current crisis, he said.

Many of the G.I.s have killed innocents. I'd not necessarily call them murderers, though.

This is war. Sometimes the squeamishness from the right about terminology amuses me.

The Iraqi deaths come from Iraqis killing each other. The "Stop the war" chant is kinda pointless. Its not ours to stop.

Much of the deaths do come from other Iraqis/al Qaeda/Iranian munitions. But judging from the studies done on how many people the US has falsely imprisoned in Iraq, I'm guessing that several thousand innocent Iraqis is a very low figure for how many the Americans have killed. And then add onto that collateral damage.

I have a real hard time taking those comments seriously.
I have to clean today so you are safe for now.

Ok, this is BS.

If we are arguing this then we are the guilty party in WW1 and WW2.

Yet, would we have been the better off if we had lost?

Personally, war sucks, but facism, nationalism and currently Islamism as a political system sucks worse.

Therefore should I feel bad? I have listened to those who have suffered in WW2 and they would not want to live today in a world that was similar to their world then.

If they wouldn't Why should you or me?

The US could've easily won this war. Its called firebomb the hell out of Iraq much like allied forces did in Germany and Japan. Blow everything up, win the war, and rebuild it from scratch.

That is the easy way. The US did NOT do this because they actually care about minimizing civilian casualties. Do you liberals think insurgents go out of their way to minimize civilian casualties?

What you should feel badly about is the unnecessary deaths. The US policy on engagement has been to shoot first, ask later. Literally. There is little or no concern about collateral damage, and that is a huge problem. As has been said by many military men who have led and or fought in Iraq, you have to win the hearts and minds. Ignoring that has led to the quagmire we have now.

I wonder what your response would be to the indiscriminant killing of one of your loved ones by occupying GIs from Iraq could avoid having to put themselves at risk would be...

And, if war had been declared, you might have a point. It wasn't.

Do you think the US has? If so, you have not read much on the subject and are making huge, unjustified assumptions.

A word to the wise. If you are attending a wedding in Iraq and the guests begin shooting at nearby helicopters expect collateral damage.

If Dad is attending a meeting with his local terrorist cell it is unnecessary to tag along, they don't need lunch, the meeting may be short.

So Iraqis murdering each other is wrong? Oh. Glad the UN cleared that up.

Who are the liberals on this thread?

This is exactly why I think the squeamishness on the part of the OP is so amusing. The Americans *have* gone in with good intentions. In fact, they went in to install democracy. But aiming too high and failing is part of the problem.

I guess people don't understand why the book was called 'Heart of Darkness.' Its not because the foreigners' hearts were dark BEFORE they entered the jungle!
