On a related note: it was amusing to a perverse extent that the co-authors of the infamous The Bell Curve were both Jewish, and from the same ancestral sect. Not coincidentally, they identified members of their sect as having the highest average IQ of any ethnic/racial group in the world.

There is a sociobiologist named Kevin MacDonald who argues that Jews are so smart because centuries of murderous persecution culled the herd of the ones who were genetically disposed toward stupidity, whereas the bright ones had the brains to see that the pogroms were coming and high-tail it out of town.

Furthermore, MacDonald says that Jews now function as sort of a parasitical organism which furthers its own survival by attaching to, and subsequently diluting, the host culture. For example, he says that the reason Jewish groups support widespread immigration to the US from a variety of cultures is because they have an inherent interest in weakening American cultural homogenity.

Anyway, that's what the critics of sociobiology call "Just So" stories, comparable to the explanations of how the camel got his hump and whatnot. In terms of plausibility, MacDonald's thesis is only slightly less credible than the other one I heard about Scandanavians being pacifistic because the Vikings all left the place and got themselves killed, thus removing most of the violent genes from the pool.

I have an alternative to that. The Lebanese who are related to the Jews since the Lebanese are Canaanites often have highly productive people out of proportion of their population in North America. You have John Sununu, Jack Sheehan, a current New England governor, Spencer Abraham, Congressman Nick Rahall, James Zogby founder of the ADC, and a famous polling individual, Hanna and Barbera, cartoons, James De Bakey, famous heart surgeon, the founders of the St. Jude Hospital famous for Leukemia treatment, John Abi Zaid, a famous general, and a famous actor on Mash, and also Tony Shalhoub, the famous poet Gibran Khalil Gibran, I believe, George Mitchell, Jack Nassar of that car company, and you can include Omar Sharif, though he was born in Egypt. Both the Jews and Lebanese have similar ancestry and are both prolific. So I won't use the persecution thing unless you say well the Lebanese Christians were also persecuted. It would be a stretch, I think.

Just in case I've been misunderstood, I attach no weight whatsoever to MacDonald's persecution argument. I think it's utterly crackpot.

One slight correction...

Hanna and Barbera

I'm pretty sure that Barbera was Sicilian. I saw an interview once with him, in which he stated that "as a good Sicilian", he originally wanted Fred and Wilma's baby to be a boy.

Yeah, look at me!

He's just not putting as much thought into his trolling these days.

Must be that married maturity of his slowly creeping through.

Where has the PC backlash come from? I haven't heard anyone get offended just by having intelligence as it relates to race discussed. Hasn't the anti-PC, bracing-yourself-to-get-persecuted-by-the-thought-police stance gotten as tired and irritating as the PC movement itself?

There's nothing hypothetically wrong with suggesting populations that have had long periods of isolation have different gene frequencies and some of these gene frequencies could lead to variations in intelligence. Intelligence however is an ill defined quality. We've all encountered the guy who got 98% in every course but couldn't wipe himself. Intelligence tests tend to be good "in group" relative measures but are poor measures between groups.

To make inferences in science, you need good evidence. While Watson's gene frequency hypothesis is valid, the evidence he's using (people who work with black employees know, problematic IQ tests) is poor evidence. Watson did not win his nobel prize by shooting his mouth off. He used careful lines of evidence. In science if you're making claims without good evidence, even mundane claims, you'll quickly ruin your reputation. You'll ruin it doubly quick if you take it directly to the media instead of a community of your peers for review. Consider the cold fusion guys.

Race is, no doubt, a touchy social issue. The damage comes in when the common man makes the assumption "ah Watson clearly did the careful research on DNA so he must have done it on blacks and intelligence."

We'd expect more of a scientist who built his career on careful observation.

Many Brits are not white, also the UK economy is not run by 100% British whites

For almost its entire history, most Brits have been white, and the economy has been run by white people for that same period, so when talking about long-term economic development, it is entirely accurate to describe the UK as a white, European nation.

Whilst many other white nations showed poverty and poor economies(I'm talking to you Ireland!). I aslo have to ask if a good economy is a sign of intelligence.

As for this race debate, since blacks have been allowed to compete on an equal basis with whites, they have dominated sprint athletics, and there are physiological reasons why blacks, of West African origin, do dominate these events. Now, if we conclude that racial differences can be witnessed on the athletics track, why is it so controversial to state that they are may also be seen when assessing intelligence.

Sure debate it. But where is your evidence? Watson fails to site any evidence just an assumption based on rather anecdotal grounds. We also need to look beyond ESPN for examples of what black people are good at.

He could be part Sicilian, but Barbera is a surname among Lebanese Christians. The last name could also trace to Italians like the last name Siniora.
