I know there's other threads on here about macs, but I was hoping for some input without having to read through all the stone throwing between mac and pc users.
Was thinking about purchasing a macbook pro and aside from the normal questions about whether or not they're really worth it, I was wondering why it costs so much to go from the standard 2gigs of ram to 4gigs. They're charging an extra $700USD for a 2gig upgrade. Seems a bit excessive since you can buy a gig for under 100 bucks these days. If I get the 2gig machine would I only have enough slots for 2 gigs, is that why they're charging so much, for extra slots that aren't in the 2 gig models? |

If you order 4GB of RAM, you are getting two 2GB sticks. If you order 2GB of RAM, you get two 1GB sticks.
So..... a 2GB stick is more expensive. On the other hand, the 1GB stick = less $$$ in comparison.
I just bought a MacBook Pro 15inch (got it today). I prefer the 15 to the 17, since the 15 is already a large screen. However, even if you are doing video editing or playing with Maya, I see no reason to jump up to four quite yet. Just my thoughts. ^^ |

apple is notorious for overcharging for ram. if you are buying direct from apple, do not but extra ram from them. just leave the system with the base amount of ram, and then head over to yongsan and pick up the ram you need for like a quarter of the price that apple charges... |

Thanks to both of you. That's exactly what I wanted to know. As long as the option for upgrade is there, then there's no reason to pay those insane prices just to save the trip to a store.
I'm going to wait until the new OS is out to buy one. But I'm seriously considering switching to Mac now. It's not that I don't like regular pc's, it's just that none of them seem to have the specs I'm looking for, except maybe shopping directly from Dell, but their laptops seem really overpriced. |

Here's another question:
I checked out the prices and compared the Apple US store with the Apple Korea store, and for the same exact computer I'd end up paying about 800k won more if I bought one from the Apple Korea store. In other words Apple jacks up the prices for Korean purchases. If I bought one from the US store and had it sent to my father, then shipped here, would I have any problems with customs or have to pay additional fees that would negate the amount of money I'd save from buying one from the US store? |

Apple doesn't jack up the prices, Korea does.
As far as customs goes, if the computer is new, you're going to have to pay a fee, so just get him to open it up and take it out of the plastic...that might help. |

I wasn't replying to you. I was replying to as-ian. I should have made that clearer earlier. |

You will prolly save money just buying here in Korea. Unless you know someone who is coming over here from the states. With the price of the Mac, you may still be charged. I have heard from several other people that even taking out of the box and saying that it is used, they still have been charged since the product looked brand new.
The nice thing about the Korean Macs is Hangeul on the keyboard. |

That's kind of what I was leaning towards. Even if I do have to pay a little more it just seems like less of a hassle getting it here.
The big question with that however is will I be able to get the English version of the OS? |

One nice thing about Macs is that every language is included in the operating system. You just choose English after you boot it up for the first time. |

I bought my Macbook here at COEX. Everything is in English. The only thing different from the US Macbook would have to be the Hangeul on my keyboard and the manuals being in Korean. |

Why wouldnt i? Just to get leopard preinstalled and get the dvd with it? I am more than wiling to just pay the 10USD for leopard when it comes out.
EDIT: By 10USD, i mean the apple program for those who have bought a computer from oct. 1 who get that price for leopard. |

One benefit of having Tiger on the new laptop and upgrade to Leopard for the 10 dollars is that most new OS's tend to have problems. Usually takes a few months or years in some cases to iron out all the problems. I am going to wait about a month before upgrading to Leopard. |
