Anyone else have a TV station coming over to their school to film a class?
I learned yesterday that tuesday a tv network will film my class for a bit to display native teachers at work. With news of misused photos and the whole pedophile scandal, I just dont want video of me to be used in a negative light. I even told my co-teachr about it. Well, besides that, I made a powerpoint jeopardy game for the kids (wan meant for after i finished a film i am showing), but have to use it early. Any of u guys have demos and what will u do for it?

Most schools film a class for the advertisment. I had one school film me teaching a class and they used it for advertisment for the local TV station. So I got to see myself on TV commericals for 2 years. It was great, becuase I got a lot of free meals and drink in town.
They are doing it to get more students for the school. |

It's a public middle school. Why would they need to advertise? |

It's just gov't PR, really.
This is not uncommon. Especially in Kyonngi-do.
Some private schools especially seek positive media attention to make themselves look good. Don't sweat it. They will put the camera on you for about 5 minutes, choose a 5 second clip of you telling something to the students, and them answering, then they will spend the rest of the time interviewing your boss and several students.
If they do something different, like ask you to sit on a bench and tell a young male student that he looks handsome, then use caution!

I had a local TV crew come and film me at summer camp. It was peanut butter and jelly day. Great fun. |

I refused to do the TV Dancing Monkey at my middle school. No sweat. They grabbed a Western university student and he went through the hoops showing how well the Korean co-teacher taught and controlled him. |

I had this done a couple of times years ago. If it's the news...it's not film. They want footage. They'll take some footage of kids having fun, then some of you 'teaching', then they might ask you a question about Korean education and the importance of English. Your handler will probably translate for you and everything will take about an hour. Most of which is you standing around doing nothing. You know how an open class is a farce? This is worse. They were telling me to do stuff like high 5 my students and put my arm around one. I told them no. There's no way in hell a teacher would act like that. I'm there to teach, not to be their buddies. |

I just saw a decent unslanted documentary on EBS where they take a couple foreign teachers, film their lessons and have them interview about their students. Could be a weekly thing.
These two teachers seemed to just wing what they were teaching as if they didn't have any advanced notice. They're responses didn't make any sense and they skirted around the main point of the question.
I hope other teachers on here don't do as bad. |

Come on, we are all innocents here victimized by the oppressive Koreans. It must have been trick editing. |

Was just today that I only have my Demo class tomorrow to be recorded and then I have to do some kind of dialogue/interview thing with students which will be recorded as well by the TV network/education board. I was handed a script and asked to try to memorize it by tomorrow. it is the silliest thing i have ever read, full of erros and sentence/responces that make no sense considering the questions in the dialogue. I am being a good sport and doing it without a word (non-sarcastic words at least) cause my school has been great to me so far. anyone else have to do this? seriously, am gonna feel like one of those guys on Arirang TV. |

They didn't even consult with you over the scripted questions and answers?
Yep,you probably will feel like one of those people on Arirang. It's just being done for show.I wouldn't bother being a good sport with these people anymore,as they have no qualms about butchering English. If they were upfront and said straight out "You are paid to be weikuksaram",it mightn't seem so bad,but still is.
Why do they bother outside of securing more funding for their schools?
If they don't at least take you out for a slap-up meal(and maybe a slapper )I'd say no more Mr.nice guy. |

i did a practive run with my student since we both are apparently MCing for the program and showing the school around a bit. Seriously, the dialogue makes me laugh aloud, and we r not suppose to change it despite the fact that it has weird phrasing and non-sensical responses to each other's statements. The student told me also, in korean on the script it states we have to act out and even dance and sing. seriously, english monkey stuff is out for me. i told my co-teacher i refuse to dance or sing sober. |

I had to do one of these, and it was all nicely scripted. The students I were to be teaching had been selected and had rehearsed their lines for the cameras... and then the film crew arrived at the wrong time. I was teaching what is possibly the worst behaved class in the school.
The film crew chose 2 kids at random and asked them about the school. I am not sure what they said, but those kids got beats as soon as the film crew were out of sight. Hilarious |

Shortly after I started at my new elementary school. I was informed that the education officials and some guys from the bank that sponsored my position would sit in on a class and that oh yeah KNN would film a bit.
They were only in the class for about 5 mins. Apparently my face was flashed on TV on the following Saturday morning.
I have my demo class this Friday. At my current school I teach 80+, actually I do everything and my co-teacher translates if necessary. I'm worried that our demo should be a stupid show class with us taking parts etc. I have been assured just to carry on as normal. I will have the worst class in school for the demo unfortunately |
