Don Hertzfeldt is my favorite short animator.

Billys balloon is a great representation of his work. It's also on youtube

There is a PSA in the subway about a a sick mom, a doltish dad, a medical bill too high and the little daughter girl that saved her money and then was ultimately able to pay the medical bill and save her family. Beck-won-at-a-time. Its pretty darling.

Without a doubt, so many of the wonderful ones created through the NFB (National Film Board of Canada) http://www.nfb.ca/sections/animation/

You'll note Saturday is world Animation Day. Go here for a full list. I've used many of these in class and they stream and big screen well. Examples of some that work well in class are The Big Snit, George and Rosemary and of course McLaren's The Neighbours.
