I like dogs myself. They're more intelligent, loyal, and just more fun in general. Cats are too much like women (ouch)...

I like both. So I couldn't take part in your poll. Depending on my lifestyle though, I'd probably be more willing to take on a cat, unless I had a big garden for a dog and lots of time to walk him.

Temperamentally, I prefer dogs, but I live in an apt and believe keeping a dog (a social animal) penned up alone all day is selfish and cruel. Cats are OK and I will probably get one soon.

Cats and birds don't usually get along though.

I've had a cat befriend a bird. Takes some work and diligence but it happens. When neither scared nor hungry, most animals have an amazing capacity for friendship.

I couldn't choose between them. I have kept both in the past and found them both to be loyal pets.

The psychology of cats and dogs is different but cats are often under-estimated in my opinion. Some people think they are solitary and unfaithful but I have not found that to be so.

At the moment I am helping to care for six feral garden cats plus two kittens (one disabled) that live in the gardens of my apartment, and mainly on my terrace. Having only kept cats one-at-a-time in the past I am really fascinated by their group behaviour.

A dog of course is a bundle of friendship.

I love both so cannot vote.

Good one! I'm a cat person and I had the best darn cat in Taiwan, but my ex got custody which turned out to be for the best. My cat adopted my former father-in-law at a time when he discoverd he had stomach cancer. They were nigh inseperable and I'm sure Ghosty (cat) had a calming and medicinal effect for him as the cat would often lie on his swollen stomach. He recently passed away a week ago and my ex told me that the cat is lost and lonely. They had a type of shrine put up for him and the cat would sit in front of the picture and almost stare at it...

An interesting bit of info is that they lay the deceased in the home for a short time, but cats are forbidden to be there. They believe that if a cat jumps over the body, the body will spring up.

She sure was a smart, good cat. I taught her to hunt any mosquitoes which is a great thing while living in Taiwan, eating'em was her preference.

I agree. I have three cats here, and they are no trouble at all.

Cats. I don't need a dumb animal to constantly reassure me that I'm deserving of love.

Owned both, and love both, so I can't vote.
It's like comparing apples and oranges really. They both have good and different qualities.
