Dang, Southern California is on fire again. Our (mandrl's) hometown of San Diego is surrounded by fires and communities are being evacuated, scary stuff. It sucks to be so far away when stuff like this happens.

| The smell of smoke has been in the air since about 2 pm yesterday. Sky has been a bit eerie since then as well. Just saw the fire has jumped I-15. Kinda crazy. |

That sucks and I hope no one is hurt or loses their house (this last one is near impossible to avoid, though).

The situation appears to be getting worse. I just talked to my former roommates and they have been evacuated from their condo. My fiancee has many family members and friends who have been evacuated from their homes as well. The San Diego Wild Animal Park is in danger from one of the many fires burning and some of the endangered animals have been evacuated. I have a brother and a few close buddies who are firefighters, some county and some federal, who are fighting the fires right now. Last year my brother went to four separate funerals for firefighter friends of his who were killed in some deadly fires that swept through California at that time. My heart drops when I think about his and my friends safety right now. It really does suck to be away right now, even though there is nothing we could really do if we were there.  |

There's 8 fires all around the county - from north, east and south county! Didn't think anything can be as bad as the Cedar Creek fire, but they're all saying this is the worse fire in all of SoCal in modern times  |

yeah, worried about my mom as well. even saw this alert on my credit union's website
Due to the fires in San Diego County, USE's San Diego branches are closed today. Also due to the fires, USE is operating with reduced teams in the Member Service Center, which may result in service delays. Please have patience as your call will be answered as quickly as possible in the order received. Thank you for your patience during this San Diego County emergency situation.

It's too bad they can't/don't just make houses out of inflammable materials, landscape appropiately, and evacuate periodically when necessary.
Hasn't anyone figured out yet that oak trees and wooden mansions are not a good idea in that terrain? |

fireproof - like what, brick? keep in mind this is also earthquake territory.
the big problem with fires last time was the eucalyptus trees, though. apparently they "explode" when they get hot, rapidly spreading the fire. i haven't read up on all the details though because most of the coverage i saw was on a 1000 firefighter force in (of course) malibu |

yea brick, concrete, stone, adobe, synthetic fire retardent materials etc...
but yea, I get your point about the earthquakes. Although....is a traditional wood house actually much better under those conditions? |

| actually, yes. from my knowledge, woods holds up best. followed by steel. you basically need something that can yield a bit to force. so it's a bit of a choice - earthquake-proofing or fire-proofing? |
