no slingblades, no firearms.... gotta like how tame are Korean kids
last week in my hagwon classes I confiscated
- a can of coffee (no way an elementary school kid should be drinking that, and especially no drinks or food in my class)
- a yo-yo
- a hat
- two bags of chips
- a few of those casino-looking round flick chip toys
- a 500 won coin
in most cases (except the coffee) I am willing to give back the stuff after class but in these cases I forgot and they either forgot or thought them gone forever
comic books, mp3 players and mobile phones I simply insist they put away and say "yellow card" and the fear on their face is enough that nobody ever brings their phone, player or book out after that |

Chewing gum
Rubber bands
hand warmers
comic books
One day I found a treasure trove. I confiscated 2 Nintendo DS's, 3 cell phones, a slingshot, and a partridge in a pear tree. |

I should add I do give them the cell phone back at the end of class
minus the battery though.
I don't want to keep an expensive cell phone in my desk but a battery is ok |

...so we'll be seeing these things in the Buy & Sell forum then? |

if i was one of the cheap *beep*s that try to sell such petty stuff, yeah...
a year or two ago i tried to sell a sock with a hole in it if you recall, to show how absurd the buy&sell items get sometimes (but that's a subject of another thread) |

So far today, in two 40-minute lasses:
One cell phone
six books/comics
two notes
and a partridge in a pear tree (don't know how the student smuggled that one in) |

I always remove the battery since I don't want to take the chance that someone goes through my desk and takes the phone. It would be much easier to replace a battery than shell out 300,000-500,000W for a new phone that a lot of students have. |

True that... besides even if I did have one you needed a dolly to carry the damn thing. |

When I was teaching at a public school, my Korean co-teachers would take away phones from the kids among other things. I rarely took stuff when I worked there. Although there was that time when an eraser got thrown out the window. My co-teacher was a bit surprised I did that. |

Why take the coffee? For many years in North America we were told that coffee was bad for children. Specifically that it would stunt the growth of kids. Not only is that not true, but many studies have shown that coffee in anything other than large quantities (usually stated as more than 4 cups per day for children) is harmless to children and may even reduce the development of Type II diabetes.
None-the-less, it still surprises me to see children drinking coffee. But like many old wives tales, the harmful effects of coffee on children are not scientifically supported. |
