30% of Restaurants Serve Fake Korean Beef

By Kim Tae-jong
Staff Reporter

Korean diners preference for "hanwoo," or purebred Korean beef, leads it to have a high premium at the market. But about 30 percent of beef that is sold as hanwoo at local restaurants is mislabeled as such, according to a report Monday.

The report from the Korea Food & Drug Administration (KFDA) was submitted to the ongoing parliamentary audit of the government at the request of Rep. Chang Bok-sim of the United New Democratic Party.

The food administration conducted genetic tests on samples of hanwoo taken from local restaurants. The result showed that over 30 percent of the meat was imported.

The test in 2005 on 150 beef samples taken from 51 restaurants showed that 34 percent used imported meat. A 2006 test on 125 restaurants in major cities including Seoul, Busan and Daejeon also showed that 30 percent, or 84 out of 279 samples, was mislabeled as hanwoo.

``A new method is required to tell if beef is hanwoo or imported and to prevent damage to local stockbreeders,'' Chang said.

In the audit, the KFDA was criticized that it had neglected its duty to inspect restaurants that falsely label beef.

Rep. Kim Byung-ho of the major opposition Grand National Party, said that proper measures for this have not been taken, citing the training for inspections was only given once this year and only seven percent of inspection officials participated in it.

``Crackdowns on fake origins of products are required. But the government agency has neglected their duty to inspect it,'' he said.

The recent inspection showed only 409 restaurants out of 7,246 turned out to have violated the law by stating the wrong origin of the beef, but Kim claimed the number would be much higher if more trained inspectors had been deployed.

I bet you it was American beef. How dare they serve the beef of the white devils! Everyone knows they put bones in it to kill Koreans right?

Seriously though, I can't for the life of me understand why they have a problem with American beef.

Who cares if the beef is fake, or the handbags are fake, but if the orgasms are fake then I'm shattered.

Koreans know US Beef is superior. All the very very expensive BBQ places serve US Beef, advertised as such.

The funny thing is when they allow the US beef into Korea, the price of all beef falls. Of course then they have to invent some reason to stop it from coming in again so the prices go back up.

One of my students told me that her son came home from school a few weeks ago newly resolute in his fervour against US beef. Why? His class had been shown a video that day detailing the appallingly cruel conditions in which American cows are raised and slaughtered.

It's coming to something when schools are propagandizing on behalf of the beef industry...

...And Korean cows are slaughtered how? What, are they coaxed to sleep and then given a lethal injection? Some sort of Buddhist funeral? Rolling Eyes

Don't you mean on behalf of the Korean beef industry? Yes, that is sad.

merely the 20 millionth example about how koreans are liars and corrupt and would kick their mother if it meant making a profit.

1. buy cheap american/australian beeft
2. lie and say it's expensive korean beef
3. profit
4. use profits to send your kid to a sh.itty english hogwan
5. complain when the hogwan boss lies that his 'american' teachers are really from south africa.
6. goto 1

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

ps. no offense to south africans, i'm australian and during my first job in korea my boss lied and told the parents i was from seattle! Evil or Very Mad
