Alcohol, like tobacco and coffee, is rationed. There is a ration card to limit their buying amount. For enlisted it's two bottles of liquor or two 24-packs a month. Doubt any of them are going to give up their sweet, sweet liquor for a few extra bucks. BTW, the point of the ration card is to discourage attempts like yours. |

When I was stationed in Germany with the US Army, I had a ration card for booze and cigarettes. I got like 4 bottles of liquor a month and 4 cartons of cigarettes a month. The booze I sold to a German friend since we were both enjoying it and he wanted to get it. I got 4 5ths of JD every time each month.
As for getting military booze, you would have to know someone in the US military to go on a base and get that for you.
In Germany, many guys sold it since they weren't drinking it on account of having hash to smoke. Many guys don't drink a drop if they got hash or pot to smoke, but if in a place like Korea where there really is virtually no such thing available, you can bet they highly value their rationed booze and even buy on the Korean economy to get more than what is rationed.
So much for getting that American military booze in Korea. I bet if you hung around Itaewon a lot, you would get to know American Army guys who might sell at a high markup price who drink at local bars on the Korean economy. |

There is an old Korean woman and a younger guy who drive around in this little car, selling military booze to any bar that wants it in Itaewon. It's from the military base. The bars there just open the bottles and pour it into old bottles that have the local Korean mark on them. Generally, they buy whiskey.
Somehow, they are getting around the ration card. |

Go overseas to a Duty Free store. Buy a few bottles. Rinse and repeat.
Or, alternately, go to Namdaemun to the black market area. They aren't as cheap as on post but cheaper than if they were legal. Maybe $5 more than what post would charge you. Selection's not so good tho. |

My son works at one of the bases here. If I understand him correctly, many items have a limit i.e. beef. He also said that many soldiers are married to locals and they supplement their income by selling to the black market.
The Koreans that work on the base are not allowed to buy from the BX/PX, but by being on the base I assume they get a feel for what it is like in the U.S. Sure makes me home sick!!! |

Is the booze on the base significantly cheaper? Costco sells JD at a reasonable price. |

The items sold at the military exchanges are cheaper for two reasons:
- The cost for shipment of the items to Korea is not borne by the consumer.
- There is no tax on the items sold in the exchange.
If you're buying stuff on the black market, you should be aware of some things:
- When you get caught, you'll have to pay the taxes you avoided in the first place.
- The stuff you purchased will get confiscated and resold or destroyed, depending on its expiration date.
- Foodstuffs at the black market are likely past the expiration date or are unfit for human consumption for some other reason.
- You can be jailed and deported.

Alcohol, like everything else sold on post, is not for profit. They charge enough to maintain. It's considered a service for those in the Armed Forces (and dependents, retirees, etc.). |

People do get caught. And the military members involved in black market lose their careers and gain a federal conviction. |
