Hi.Going to be taking my wife & baby to live and work in Korea for maybe 3 yrs at a public school starting in March of next yr. We're trying to aim to live in Jeollanam do (Yeosu/Mokpo).One of the recruiters called me n offered me a job in Gyeonggi do. My question is; how's the living expenses there? I'm a raw vegan and keen what to expect to pay for fruit and vegetables. What's the environment like? I haven't decided yet if I should take the job there or not as our main priority is to live in Jeollanam do.

Gyeonggi do is the biggest province in South Korea surrounding Seoul ... With lots of different cities ... It includes lots of smaller towns and villages as well ... So it would be hard to make a generic statement about the costs in different parts of the province ... It will vary a bit ... But in much of the province it is possible to very easily get to Seoul itself ... which can make getting other things quite easy ... So I would probably put the food costs as being on a par with Seoul ... and having the Seoul option available making it easy to get some fruit and vegetables that are less available in some of the smaller towns ....

Fruits and vegetables are EXPENSIVE here, and also very seasonal.

They're not that bad if you go to the open markets. If you buy them at E-Mart, etc. then you're gonna pay a pretty penny. If you wanna see expensive fruits and veggies go to Japan...ridiculous!

Damn, it's hard enough to live here as a vegetarian, to say nothing of being a vegan. My friends are vegetarian, and to make things more difficult they are Buddhist, so they don't eat onions or garlic. There are some restaurants that will prepare things especially for them, but for the most part they cook for themselves. I guess that's nothing new, though, right? It will be a little hard because you won't be able to eat lunch in the cafeteria, or join coworkers for dinner, or eat at most restaurants.

That said, I did know two vegans who lived in rural Jeollanam-do. Your recruiter, if you're going through Canadian Connections, should be able to hook you up with contact information if you ask for it. If you need more information, let me know and I can PM it to you.

I didn't notice too much of a difference in prices between Gyeonggi and Jeollanam-do. You'll save a little on some products---like water---in Jeollanam-do, but not enough to write home about.

Yea, especially since untutored alien babies from distant stars like the one you are from can never be too careful about what they eat.

Are you kidding? You are feeding your BABY raw vegetables and you think this is enough? Vegans are insane people.

...also, Sadiebear -- make sure you bring lots of that Vegetable washing stuff...i forget the name, or check with your pediatrician...you can easily pick up Hep C if you are eating truckloads of vegetables everyday.

make sure you make a list of HIGH danger veg / fruits:
e.g. strawberries, any leafy veg, herbs,

do you supplement with vitamins??

lots of fresh fruits and vegetables available at very reasonable prices. what's available is pretty much determined by the season.
the korean people won't understand your diet at all and will most likely privately (or openly if you don't understand korean) call you crazy.
this thread i'm sure will give you an idea of the mentality of the expat community you'll be living among in the ROK.

Water????

Or do you mean some CHEMICAL thing that was invented in the last 10 years to make money off of the burgeoning veg/vegan market? If you mean the latter then you're an idiot. I hope you meant water.

(OP: Water is available here)
