Don't take the bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok.

I got the three-day pass for Angkor Wat and was very glad of it; it's a huge and fascinating place and really requires much more than just one day.

From a friend who lives there:

The sky train is the best way to get around central Bkk.It is not an extensive route but it covers a good deal of the area,Forget taxis unless you want to be stuck in traffic for hours. Its best to use the river to travel. Cheap and interesting travel along the Chao Phraya is the way to go; its interesting , very cheap and relatively safe.Do not travel in rush hour though as it gets very busy.

Avoid being templed-out.Do things in moderation.Have clear plans for each day. Some places - like the Grand Palace - are best seen from afar viz the River.

The cheap place to stay in Bkk is the Khao San Road area. Everybody knows it; its full of aging hippies and travellers. Its had something of a renaissance in recent times and is worth a visit. Everybody knows it and its a cheap place to stay and eat and meet people.

There are huge, impressive mega shopping malls and everything in the world to buy.Its a fun and interesting ,tiring, hot steamy metroplis where abject poverty sits uneasily next to opulence and grandeur. Its certainly interesting.December is the best month also in terms of weather. Its generally cool and delightful at this time of year but its also busy ( Bkk is always busy)and more expensive.
Hua Hin is a delightful seaside resort ( a royal resort) about 3 hours south of Bkk.Its delightful. If you like golf you are certainly in the right country.
Hope this helps
