| Hi just wondering does anybody know about pay in Korea. I have been offered a contract that was 2.0 million won per month, but one of my friends has been offered 2.5 when I said this to my recruiter he said first timers only usually get 2.0 and that I should be wary of employers offering more as it shows they are having trouble recruiting therefore need to up the pay, is he talking shit or does this sound right? Anybody know? |

Are you qualified, under 30 and female (blond hair and/or blue eyes are a bonus)?
If yes, your recruiter is blowing smoke out his ass and pulling a fast one.
If no, he is still blowing smoke...
The average newbie should be able to get 2.2 mil for 30 classes of 50 minutes per week.
If you have a TESOL cert or B.Ed or real classroom experience you can add 100-300k MORE per month for your trouble.

Gah?! I've never heard of anyone getting that much for their first year. Everyone makes 2.0, hands down, with the odd exception of 2.1 at a public school (if they have a BEd). |

This is my first year here, and my first year of full-time teaching. I'm getting 2.6. Yes, I'm qualified, but certainly first timers don't always get 2.0! |

My green as grass newbie (35 year old female with a BA in marketing and NO teachers training, background or experience) co-worker has a base salary of 2.1 mil for 22 classes of 40 minutes per week + she gets an additional 100k per week (400k per month) for an additional 5 classes (again 40 minutes) during the afternoons.
Her total work day is 8:40am - 4:40pm. No weekends, evenings or stat holidays.
Total salary = ~ 2.6 mil per month for 27 classes per week + she gets housing, airfare, 4 weeks annual paid holidays, pension, severance and medical.
If you are foolish enough to settle for 2.0, well... you get what you agreed to I guess. Come renewal time it will certainly be time to dig out your interpersonal and negotiating skills.

| It's my first year and I'm making 2.2.... with just a B.Sc. A friend who was here for three years told me not to take less than that. I honestly don't think it's too hard to change their minds. I know for a fact a co-worker who started right before me only makes 2.0. My bet is he didn't ask for more. |

| Thanks for your opinion, I have got a BA and am awaiting my results for my MA which should be in a couple of weeks so although the contract was signed I think I still should have a chance to negotiate a new salary before I head to my visa interview in a couple of weeks, do you think its wise or do you think it will just get them a little aggravated with me before i even arrive? |

You shouldn't get our hopes up too much as far as negotiating your salary with the current school that you are in negotiations with. There is little negotiation, if any. |

You're missing my point. I've never even *heard* of someone getting more than 2.1 in their first year. You're an exception to the rule as there definitely aren't enough jobs like that to suit everyone. |

fwiw I make 4.7 m won/month and teach 6 hours per week. I have 9 months of paid vacation as well. Is the pissing contest finished now?  |

| She may have some 'extras' that compensate for a 2 mill salary though. Some places have no utility charges etc. Not that that makes up the difference for what is a low salary, but at least next year she will be armed with M.A. and expereicne here and can shoot up the payscale. |
