That's some pretty strong DBZ hate you have there.

I've always thought that DBZ was fun to watch. I used to watch it after cross country practice in highschool.

As for my anime reccomendations I'd say

1) Cowboy Bebop - Great overall show + movie
2) Full Metal Alchemist
3) Visions of Escaflowne - fantasy drama + movie (reccomend series over movie)
4) Death Note!!
5) Howel's Moving Castle (movie, really good)
6) Naruto/DBZ/One Piece - when your in the mood for just action stuff
7) Ruroni Kenshin - Spelled wrong, but really awesome series about a wandering samuari in the Meji era of Japan

What did you think of the summer blockbusters this year?

I am a fan of good, well written, well animated anime; but I sincerely wonder how seemingly intelligent (by "seemingly intelligent" I mean "not mentally retarded") people can become fans of anime shows like "Dragon Ball Z" or some other show in the same genre.

After hearing that "DBZ" is so great for so many years from people my age (albeit people I didn't care for very much who also like professional wrestling), I tried to give it a watch... and without a doubt, lacking any form of exaggeration, found it to be the most rancid piece of trash animation ever aired on any kind of TV, anywhere, ever. It was just awful. I hated the animation, I hated the characters, the story looked like something a ten year old could write, the very facial expressions of the characters really pissed me off... it was just god awful.

Anyway, I know this is way off topic but, why is anime like this popular and why do most anime fans like it? Its really beyond me. All the anime I like is what I consider good/classic/well done, but the stuff that is popular right now is quite the opposite of what I like.

I kind of agree the Dragonball anime aren't so great, but the mangas are terrific, especially the original (which comes before the "Z" sequels). Toriyama Akira (the guy who created it) is probably THE most famous manga author ever, he's also responsible for really popular video games like chrono trigger and the dragon quests.

The original Dragonball has a lot more toilet/sexual humor and clever dialogue than the censored, watered-down export versions. A lot gets lost in the English translations.

I just thought of two pretty good older ones: Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999. They are really famous in Japan (the author is Matsumoto Reiji), kind of fantasy/space opera type of motifs (like star wars). A bit dated, but classic - I recommend them.

I recently read a really good medieval fantasy type manga called Berserk (also quite famous), which is extremely violent and dark, but the story and illustrations are both top notch. It has been made into an anime as well, but I haven't seen it.

Others have already mentioned Miyazaki Hayao, everything is great by him. I think my personal favorite was Nausica of the Wind Valley. Laputa is really good too.

i'm not really huge into the genre, but revolutionary girl utena is fantastic. mind you, you've got to sit through the first 13 episodes (which may seem like they couldn't appeal to anyone but a 12 year old japanese girl) before the story really begins opening up. but it's really worth it to get to the end. and then there's a movie, which is also really great. but don't even bother trying to make heads or tails of that before you finish watching the series.

someone also mentioned neon genesis evangelion. that's a good one too.

I watched the animated version of Berserk. It was awesome! The only bad part is that the whole reason why they animated it was to get more interest in the manga.

They stopped animating it at a cliff hanger and those who've read the manga say it only gets better.

I don't think they will decide to keep animating it though as it served its purpose and got a lot of people to start reading the manga.

Yeah, the manga is seriously crazy... it might actually be the most violent thing I've ever read. Really good illustration and story, but definitely not for the squeemish.

If you like love or comedy or outright domestic violence, I recommend Love Hina.
If you like action/violence in space or a western, I recommend Trigun. A preacher with a machinegun hidden in a portable cross appears around episode 8.
If you don't like flashy stuff and want something a little more realistic, I recommend Black Lagoon. You'll think the psycho maid on episode 11 is the Terminator as well.
If you like black comedy, I recommend The Boondocks. it comes on Adult Swim TV and Adult Swim.com
Special note; the Samurai Champloo intro goes better with Boondocks intro music.
If you are sick/twisted, or want to find out just how damn disturbed the Japanese can really be, I recommend Legend of the Overfiend. This crap was so nasty it was banned in like 10 countries, including Britain. AND they made 6 of them! I only watched 3 before I said "Oh hell nah, I aint watchin this crap any damn more!"
If you like old school craziness, I recommend Tank Police. It closely remembers the scene in Grand Theft Auto 3 where you use the cheat to get a tank, then perform police missions in the tank.

You guys have any recommendations?

Haven't seen a lot, but I've always been a fan of Akira right from the beginning. I found Momoiro Sisters quite good, too.
