If you are browsing this board thinking about working in Korea, go to China, Japan or Taiwan instead.
If you have nothing invested in Korea already--language classes or Taekwondo experience, or friends, why not choose another foreign country and skip the degree checks, criminal checks, and every other check? |

Are you seriously suggesting that no paperwork is required to get a visa in the countries you listed?! Surely you jest.
For just one example: to get into JET you have have to provide documentation up the ying yang.
Now, the difference between the Hermit Kingdom and other places is this: in everywhere except Korea, once your visa is approved, that's it. Authorities have actually done THEIR job and verified your docs. |

I like Taiwan, but get ready for more crap that will annoy you equally. Ie; people asking why you work out at noon, because you just CAN'T do that.
People asking why you are able to use chopsticks...
People telling you how much everything they own cost.. asking you how much everything you own cost... People telling you how much their dogs cost. |

I lived in China for 2 years.
I got sick once a month. Yes, I logged 11 serious sickness cases in one year. I was often in and out of the hospital despite having been sick about once in the two years prior to arriving (when I was living in Japan). The pollution will create breathing and sinus problems if you are even slightly allergic and are living in an urban area.
The money sucks. $1000/month for getting the run-around, or $20/hour for being pimped and given a swiss cheese schedule after being promised you would have a full schedule.
Last summer I turned down a summer camp because I was promised an awesome schedule from a school I had an extensive relationship with. I arrived and had 3 classes spread out from 9am-5pm... that's $60/day. This is the norm.
If you're going to China, get ready for spitting, pushing, being coughed on, having people stare at you endlessly, being sick, not being able to eat any meat unless you cook it (and for the love of God please wash it 900 times.)
I remember even shopping at Jusco the packaged chicken would even be covered in dirt. I pointed it out to them and they said "Just wash that off." |

Korea sucks because you should bow... not that you have to, but the fact that you should just sucks. Also, kimbap gets really old after you eat it 30 or 40 times. Being forced to recycle is also complete b.s. Don't come here, it's hell. |

Go to China. I lived in the Korean Autonomous Zone in Jilin province: I had a great time. |

Funny.
Just thinking, I have never bowed in my life. I nod occasionally because saying "hi" is hard work. I eat kimbap about twice a year, more often than I'd like. I don't mind recycycycling since all my trash is beer cans. |

Hahaha. The other night I was eating in a restaurant, at the bar next to the window. This place has huge wrap-around windows and I was the only person in there besides one other guy. He starts hacking then runs outside, starts dry heaving, then runs over right in front of me and vomits on the sidewalk. He had a HUGE area, but decides to give me a show right while I'm taking a bite. That was awesome.
Check please. |

it is part of my contract to bow every morning. Must eat kimchi at lunch, or else the boss will be upset for not taking part in korean culture. Nobody at my school speaks English and I dont have a co-teacher. I have no idea what is going on sometimes. Everything is told at the last seconds. Today at 9.05 3rd graders showed up for a class, they didnt have class today and all the suddent this 4th grade teacher who speaks a bit of English told me you have a class at this time....heheheh and she left....korea makes me sick and I am out of here.... |

Pretty much spot-on. I was sick for well over a month once because as soon as I began to get well I'd catch the same bug again from one of my coworkers. On the plus side, Korean viruses ain't shit once you've lived in China. |
