I did a little survey of the Facebook members and this is what they have come up with so far (10 people answered, but some fell into multiple categories.)
Anything is good: 4
Indian is my favourite: 6
Mexican is my favourite: 1
Thai is my favourite: 1
I like Korean food least: 4
Given that a significant number of people have expressed a preference away from Korean food, I think I should deemphasize the Korean stuff. Re: consciousness of the carnivorous cook, that really didn't come into play. |

Well, ub the charismatic boss lady prez, but hopefully, promoting vegetarianism and animal rights causes won't also be deemphasized under your iron-fisted regime.
I also think that was an awfully quick survey. And, of those 16 people who responded, how many even consider themselves to basically be vegetarians, committed to never eating meat?
If anyone can vote - even meat-lovers and heavy boozers who just want to occasionally come to a vegetarian gathering (maybe just to check out the "veggie" chicks) - what the heck is its real value?
(And what the hell is "Dan the Chainsawman" doing back in Korea - I thought I made it clear to him that this country isn't big enough for the two of us! )
(Of course, to be fair - "Kermo" has obviously been a much better veggie club President than I ever was ...) |

I collected the replies from letters written from Veggie Club members, so I'm pretty sure it's legit. |

How about presenting a few options at each event of places to go to, and the people personally present decide by a show of hands where they want to meet next? ... |

That's why I rate "Kermo" the #1 Veggie Club President...
I'd rate the also very popular "Hater depot" as the 2nd greatest club pres.
Third spot goes to the original founder of the club (Caroline ?)
I'm currently the 4th best Veggie Club president - lots of good ideas but lousy execution... |

I'm going to call it:
It's going to be a lunch at 1:00 (I know the dinners will be more popular, but we'll alternate) at an Indian food place.
The last time we went to Taj Palace they treated us so well-- I think we'll go back! |

Well, there must be about 50 people on the veggie club mailing list, so only about 20% have been heard from. Utilizing my channeling skills, the silent majority of club members say that Korean vegetarian food is sparkling (and Muslims don't run the best Indian restaurants ...)
I figure that at some point, a Seoul Veggie Club 2 is inevitable... |

Really? This is getting exciting ... a veggie club with warring factions.

Sounds good. Good decision-making from Kermo. That's what we like to see, decisiveness. You're obviously not British. Or we'd never get round to eating. |

I can't make it this weekend - and obviously I don't care about the religious beliefs of the restaurateurs - but in any restaurant I like to be sure the staff are well-informed about what's in the food and able to alert me to the presence of animal products wherever they may be used. So far I've found Ashoka to be very helpful and accommodating in that area. They're quite vegan-friendly and don't seem to have a lot of hidden nasties on the veg side of their buffet, so there's a variety of dishes for me to choose from.
All Indian food in Seoul seems to be very expensive ... so if you're going to splurge, I'd recommend Ashoka for a nice meal and good service.
That said, Dal (I think that's the name of the place? It's in an art center somewhere behind the Gyeongbok Palace area) has a very nice atmosphere. The chef I spoke to the one time I went there (a few years ago) was helpful too, and I got what I needed. It might be another possibility for a future veggie club meeting. |
Thanks for the input! Taj Palace isn't that expensive compared to Ashoka (12,000 vs. 30,000) though there may be a difference in quality. I've tried Ashoka for dinner, and I was really not blown away by the vegetarian menu options. The spring rolls are admittedly awesome. Maybe the buffet would have more variety.
Could you give directions to Dal? I'd be happy to make that our next Indian meet-up point. |

If you click on "Other Facilities," there's a description of the restaurant, and if you click on "Information" you'll see a map.

You're an honorable woman, "Kermo" - as are all the honorable women who never listen to me...
Actually, the "Ashoka's" weekend lunch buffet is 25,000 won, but it's a lot more elaborate than Taj Palace's. It used to be bigger and better though a couple years ago. And their regular menu does have way too many meat entrees to be considered civilized...
I checked out "Dal" once, but their menu was also geared to meat-eaters, and the prices seemed at least as high as the Ashoka.
I haven't been to the "Chakra" in Hannam in a long time. Their buffets were better than Taj Palace's for the same price (15,000 won...) Ethnically, I think their various branches are run by Muslims, Christians, and Hindus...
The couple that runs the small "New Delhi" restaurant bordering Noksaypyeong and Itaewon are also very friendly, and we could take up all their tables with a big turnout (- it's also 15,000 won buffet...)
Some people have claimed that "Everest" is the best Indian restaurant in Seoul, but I've never checked it out ... |
