I've started my job search for next year, and I'd like to figure out what my best options are.
First, I'd like more than the contracted vacation time. Does it vary from school to school, or are there some provinces known for being more or less lenient than others?
Second, I'd like to teach near the coast and in a rural location. Both for the extra pay and for the experience.
As I see it, here are my options:
Incheon
http://www.ice.go.kr/eng/index.asp
I realize it's not rural, but I've lived here for over a year and I know the city. Does anyone know if they place teachers in Ongjin or Ganghwa-do?
GEPIK
This website seems to be out of date:
http://www.gochang.es.kr/gepik/web/index.php
Is the CGE website their official link now?
http://cge.ken.go.kr/about/greeting.php
Are they worth considering?
EPIK
http://epik.knue.ac.kr/index.asp
Do all of the schools stick to the letter of the contract? Or do some give extra vacation time?
Work'n'Play
http://www.worknplay.co.kr/
It looks like I can be a little more in control of my destination. Is this the place to hook up with individual districts?

Only being able to speak from the Chungnam EPIK program. The contracted hours may have changed as of Sep '07 but if you can find a province that doesn't make you come in for winter or summer vacation then you'll be sorted. My contract says 20 days holiday, but I get 3 weeks in the summer and 6 weeks in the winter, all paid, and I don't need to go in when there are no students.
I had a friend who worked here for a year and when he was thinking of changing checked out some of the Seoul public school jobs and most required him to go in for winter vacation even though there were no students. The contracted holiday days were held true. He said no to them and re-signed here. That says something about the contract.
But things have changed since Sep '07 with EPIK. Not too sure what the major differences are, but ttompatz would have the lowdown on this. But I do think that most of the Offices of Education have a bit of leeway with their interpretation of the contract. |

Another option is to work EPIG (English program in Gimhae).
We work in a city near Busan and have right in our contracts that we don't have to go into school during summer or winter vacation when the camps are over. This translates into 2-3 months paid holiday for us.
We also don't have to stay at our school a full 8 hours like other public schools in Korea. We can leave soon after our last class finishes, something that used to be only for hogwons.
And we get $100 monthly transportation bonus, something not typical for public school contracts.
With extra classes that we teach in our schools, my wife and I are now making $3,000/month apiece.
Gimhae also has six artificial soccer fields and one big stadium. I play on a Korean team every Sunday- apparently the first foreigner to be a full-fledged member of a Korean team in Gimhae. Just in case you are into soccer. |

Anyone else have any experience with this program?
My other half and I are in the process of applying for EPIK positions, and would prefer to be near Busan anyway.
EPIG could be interesting...
EDIT: I can't seem to find rates of pay on the EPIG site |

Did you go directly through EPIK when you were first hired? Or did you use a recruiter? |

Sweet. Do they have a web site? |

We certainly can NOT leave after our last class finishes! Although certain schools are allowing this, it is against current policy. There are rumours
that next year they will be making this part of the new contract....but I'm not holding my breath. I'll believe it when I see it...in other words.
To me, it seems like another bait and switch move to try and attract new teachers.
As for the holidays, I got 3 weeks in the summer and will probably get 3 or 4 in winter...depending on the camp schedule.
A month and a half is not 2 -3 months. |

Sorry, posting an e-mail without paying Dave would be unfair if not in direct violation of this website. If interested pm for more info.
The EPIG website is under construction. The money to create it has just been allocated to the city.
I was part of the group of representative teachers that sat in on contract adjusting for this coming year. Our contracts already give us all of summer and winter that we don't have camps, but the wording of that is being clarified to make sure the schools all follow it.
Also being allowed to leave soon after classes finish IS certainly in the new contracts, and sets us apart from many public schools in Korea.
Pay rates are similar to the EPIK program, with the exception of level 2 teachers who get 100/month more than EPIK teachers. EPIG offers a bonus for re-signing, which EPIK does not. |

Another thing I should mention is that one other thing I like about this program is that my wife and I each make lots of extra money completely within our contracts.
My wife teachers an after-school program at her main school, and teach teachers training classes, a weekly after-school class, and two evening classes for my employer- the city of Gimhae. All of this is covered under our contrats which state we can work for the city or public schools.
If you are willing to put in a few more hours and negotiate well with your school, it is not hard to legally make a lot of money. |

I went through www.tenetkorea.com
I'd used loads of hakwan recruiters to find jobs and they came up with nothing. This researching was two months, went to Tenet and the first job they offered was this one and it's ace. Excellent contract and all my schools are really good. I like working out in the countryside. I think I got lucky in some senses, but these jobs are out there. It's good to see you're doing some very good research into it. Best way to do it. |

The EPIG program sounds very interesting, but looking at their website it looks like the contract is for up to 25 teaching hours a week, which is more than EPIK or SMOE, I think, right? |

What province are you in? Which program did you go through? 6 weeks is on the low end of what I want to get, but it beats the two weeks I squeak by with these days. |

That EPIG thing sounds really good. If its as good as the previous posters said then take it if you can get it.
If you can't, then teaching in Jeollanamdo schools through Canadian Connections might be the go. Everyone I've met who went through them have been very happy. Usually get at least 4 weeks for winter and the same for summer.
Goof luck |
