Kimchi in Space: Food Makers Prepare Astronaut's Menu
Korean food manufactures are competing to whip up space-edible foods for Ko San, Korea's first astronaut who will lift off in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in April.
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute is working on kimchi with domestic food maker CJ and instant noodles with Nongshim. The Korean Food Research Institute is also developing space-safe fried kimchi, hot pepper paste and soy bean paste, rice, red ginseng and green tea with Daesang and Ottogi.

Wow, Korea is just beginning to dabble in space travel. Many kids, even 10 to 15 year olds ask me what in the world that NASA astronaut over the Earth picture is I have in my classroom. No one even knows what Star Trek and other space shows are either. So I explain all about astronauts being people who travel to space, the vastness of dark and cold emptiness beyond Earth, the place where the moon is located.
Many of us westerners take things like that for granted, but many people on planet Earth never see such things (until they meet me or go to America), especially in countries that never had any of it's own citizens travel to space.
I thought that was quite interesting.
You do need space kimchee for the Koreans though just as you need space burgers and fries for the Americans. For those of you who served in the U.S. Armed forces, Meals Ready to Eat meals are astronaut food used for ground field environments such as war zones. I am sure MRE kimchee is easy to produce and make possible. It basically is canned food in soft pouches which many commercial products are modeled after. In fact, Americas space program did innovate many food packaging technologies that are common the world over, today. |

Kimchi is full of all sorts of bacteria. In space with the lack of gravity, the bacteria may mutate, into some sort of horrible and lethal form.
We may see a new strain of super alien kimchi, that causes horrible symptoms to those who eat it regularly. Symptoms such as a lack of spacial awareness.
Wait a minute.... |

Korean astronaut goes to space. Meets alien. The first question he asks the extra terrestrial is "do you know the kimchi?" |

Typical. Why can't Korean astronauts just try the local food while they're up there? |

I'm imagining the orange kimchi foam attacking the astro-koreans and dissolving their flesh.
A new breed of Korean army officer (trained on a remote island), will have to be sent up to eliminate the threat. |

BTW , are the bathrroms on the Korean spacecraft sit down versions, I'd say there will be problems otherwise. Also I hope they are training the astro-koreans not to spit. |

When Koreans travel - they prefer to only shop at "Korean owned businesses" stay at "Korean owned" hotels and eat at only "Korean owned" Korean restaurants...
My co-teacher went to Cambodia and Thailand on her summer vacation - and tried Thai food once whilst there - and complained that the Thai rice just tasted bad - she said "It wasn't as good as Korean rice"...
I had a Korean student who lived in Germany for 3 years...
I asked the student whilst you were there did you like sauerkraut? The student didn't even know what it was - even though I tried to explain... its purple, cabbage, tastes sour,, etc - the student ONLY ate Korean food the whole 3 years whilst attending an "International school" in Germany.
I know all the Koreans who visit Australia - many only go on "Hana Tours" to Sydney - where they visit the Opera house, the "blue mountains" and stay at Korean owned hotels and eat and buy their souvenirs at Korean owned retsuarants and souvenir stores...
I guess thats why when foreigners eat at Korean restuarants here - using "chopsticks" Koreans are always so shocked....
and why sometimes my students try to give me a 10won coin and tell me - teacher - do you know?? this is Korean don.... (although I have been here almost 7 years) - they think I have never seen Korean money before... |
