This is from Daniel Jeffreys, a foreign writer for the JoongAng Daily who's about to leave Seoul. These are his last thoughts on Seoul.

http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2881976

"Korean food is delicious. It has a range of spices and an assortment of ingredients that could keep a food critic busy for months.

[i]... I have eaten in Seoul and it also has a feeling of profound harmony, conveyed by the ancient rafters and courtyard that are a feast for the eye. Add to this all the tiny, random eateries in every neighborhood in the city and one has the perfect ingredients for gastronomic explorations.

http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2881976

"I was surprised to find that Seoul could offer so much to my soul as well as my stomach or my fascination with history and politics.
Yet this metropolis, with its 10 million citizens condensed into 605 square kilometers, which makes it smaller than Tokyo or New York, provides more opportunities for spiritual enrichment than both of those cities put together.

.... Enter the park near the Grand Hyatt and its possible to see how much attention the city wants to devote to the health of its residents."

I like Seoul but a spiritual odyssey? A paradise for food? What does this guy know that I don't?

What a complete w*nker.

I'm sick to death of these pretentious, garrulous arse-wits who regularly lower the standards of the already depth-plumbing English language press with these self-congratulatory, poorly-researched, verbose, say-nothing pieces of utter sh*te. I would strongly suggest to these 'writers' that instead of sitting with their laptops in Starbucks trying to think of a synonym for 'interesting' and typing yet more arse-kissing, self-serving flummery so that they can add it to their resume or list it on their website as a 'publication', they should instead try shutting up.

Wankers.

While I don't agree with him, he is definitely entitled to his own opinion.

the most original and clever is using the "Seoul" and "Soul" as a title for your blog....

I don't think he's that far off the mark with the food though. I've grown to really enjoy it.

No, you haven't 'grown' to 'enjoy' it - you've become institutionalized.

I actually did it for precisely that reason. The blog titling that is.

Why don't they bother to copy edit these stories? Forget all the fluff--what about dangling quote marks, it's/its confusion, and missing possessive identifiers ('s)? This is just really terrible writing from every conceivable angle.

I would like to see how much he was paid to have those opinions.

I like it too but "range of spices" WTF!?!? There's chili pepper, chili pepper and more chili pepper. I love the stuff so I don't complain but Korean food is not very diverse at all.

I googled his name, and he's definitely not a teacher or backpacker. Every country looks good when you're on vacation and staying in 5-star hotels. Seoul can seem very lively and well-off if you never go out of Hyehwa-, Samseong- or Jongno-dongs.

I am a writer even though I'm teaching right now. In the writing world, we call this fluff writing. He went way over board with the soul part and is trying way too hard to sound fancy. I have never been to Seoul, but I find it hard to believe that a city with 10 million people cramped into that small of an area can do anything special for someone's soul. Probaly the opposite if truth be known. I have always believed that getting more in touch with nature can help you connect with your soul better......not a huge mega city like seoul. I don't know if anyone here has seen that movie Baraka, but it does a good job of conveying this idea.

ahhh: how i've grown to love the way you try thread after thread to wittily insinuate that your viewpoint is the only correct one. Very Happy

i'll agree- the writer is a complete fluffbag.
