I had a DWI charge some years back. It's considered a misdemeanor. It is something that appears, as far as I know, when you do a background check. It is not a felony, and it is rather common, though not excusable.
So when you do background checks with GEPIK or EPIK would this turn up or not? Would they care? A friend of mine had a DWI, but I think he got a pardon through Canada. The state where I got my DWI years back may give me a pardon for it down the road, I am not sure. I will file for one in some years. I just want to know how it would affect me for non-hagwon jobs if I decided to go for one. I may just end up renewing with my hagwon, but I was curious.

at most it'd be seen as a sign of irresponsibility... if these were puritanical protestants

it sure seems like driving while drunk wouldnt face stigma here

your biggest concern could come from their misunderstanding what it is: seeing SOMETHING instead of nothing without awareness of what it is

I'm now hearing that only "no records found" in the criminal record will be accepted and given E-2 visas.

I guess if you have something other than "no records found" or something similar to that, you're SOL.

I would think many South Koreans have DWI since they drink so much soju in this country i.e. drinking is a religion more than it is in say Texas or Arkansas. No records could mean no felony charges. Obviously, if you have speeding tickets, that would also show up on the records.
I wonder if there are any public school teachers with a DUI/DWI, but no Dave's poster has posted that they have one and work in a public school.
So I am not sure. I remember when I was applying for a public school job the recruiter said she wanted a Korea background check since I was living in Korea, and that would be good enough.

Have you enquired about applying for a pardon, & getting the old record legitimately deleted? If you've been clean for 5 years or more, it shouldn't be a problem.

Since the offense happened in Texas, I would have to get a pardon from the governor. It happened in 2002, but I would have to wait until 2008 for the 5 year mark. I am not sure if it is easy to get a pardon for a DUI in Texas or not, but I am going to look into it in about 2 or 3 years. Enough time should have elapsed by then...Sometimes, we make dumb mistakes. It seems like it is difficult to obtain one there. 16% got reviewed from the legislature to the governor and if 52% of them were approved in 2004. I am optimistic I can get it done... I will make an effort in a few years when time has elapsed....

In the meantime, get a police check from Korea. No DUI here, right?

I hardly drink in Korea. So, of course not. I am not a boozer. Do the public schools want a background check from North America or Korea?
What's the story on that?

Thanks...

It shouldn't be a problem...

Wasn't impaired driving a demonstration sport here during the '88 Olympics?

They (EPIK) told me ANY police check will do. So I got it done in Korea for free. Jongno 3 Ga police stn in Seoul, near Insadong. I got lucky, & had a Korean passerby who spoke English well help me with the application form. Took me 15-20 minutes, & I needed my ARC & passport, which I had with me.

This makes no sense to me. If you committed a crime in Korea, you would be in jail. I would hope that if a foreigner was convicted of molesting a child here, they would already be unable to get a teaching job once getting out of prison.

If they want a korean police check, why cant they just do it themselves and not get teachers involved.

Apart from the cost factor ($300Au & up for an Australia wide police check) best to get a check done in Korea where it's free.

Agree with beej that it does get a little murky. EG I have been to over 20 different countries. Theoretically I should require a police check for each & every one of them. Also, even within an ESL teacher's home country, they might be clean in their home state / province / county but have criminal records in others? I'm clean everywhere! But I'm sure there are applicants who are not.

And I object to paying $300 Au for a national check, when I've only been to 4 States.

The emphasis is mine.

I've seen you post this a number of times and, for the life of me, I can't work out where you're getting this $300 figure. Confused

The AFP will conduct a national police check (name only) for a $32.73. It requires a form, and a cheque or money order.

For more info: http://www.afp.gov.au/business/national_police_checks

I have used this service for other jobs (admittedly, local) without incident.

It really isn't THAT difficult.

Alexander:

The AFP website has been updated, since I last looked:
Quote:
Page Updated: October 8, 2007 Commonwealth of Australia 2007

I did my internet research in September 2007, & recall seeing the figure of $300+ for a complete search. Great, if the price has come down.

From the Qld Police website:

Fee:

Police Certificate based on an Australia-wide check of name only: $41.40

Police Certificate based on an Australia-wide check of name and fingerprints: $146.70

Police Certificate based on an Australia-wide check of name with ASIO security assessment - Ammonium Nitrate: $60.40

Last updated 08/08/2007

http://www.police.qld.gov.au/services/purchase/polcert.htm

I have no idea what the 'Ammonium Nitrate' refers to. Purchase of A.N. for Terrorism purposes?

But name only appears to be the cheapest, & also the type of background criminal check required. If applicants have spent the past 12 months in Korea, then it's logical to get the "name only" police check done here. It's also free in Korea.
