I have been seeing a bit of stuff on Usenet here and there lately, and was wondering if anyone uses it?? There was some talk about blueyoyo.com on here....Is it good?

I see there are a lots of places on the net, www.giganews.com for example. Costs around $20 a month.

Is it worth it?? If you get on a good private torrent site, downloads are pretty fast. But have heard that some of these places are really fast. True??

Anyways, just wondering what (if any) your experience has been??

I have been paying for years. IMO it is the best thing out there for such little headache.

I use usenetserver.com which is the cheapest "fast" service you can get that I could find. $40.00 every 3 months, unlimited bandwidth, downloads, and you can hook up to 10 connections at a time. I had 2.5MB/s speeds from them when I had my good internet connection in Korea.

I've downloaded about 600GB in the past year...wouldn't have happened without newsgroups. (Also, you can watch 99% of USA shows the next day from there...that is why I started to pay for it - cheaper than cable tv)

Thanks for these addresses. I use forumw.org and warez-bb.org and a rapidshare.com account for shows. Again, tv shows are posted next day as on usenet.

As obtaining tv shows and films, what usenet groups would you suggest?

i use www.newshosting.com

i always download at over 2.0mb/s most usenet providers don't throttle your download speed, so you can max out your bandwidth to its full potential.

i use www.nzbmatrix.com and www.nzbsrus.com to download my movies, music, games, etc.......

I also use torrents sometimes as there seems to be slighlty more selection for those hard to find files, but my download speeds are never as fast as on usenet.

what is the file retention time frame on those newsgroups...

2.0 MB/s is not really great in Korea. Current torrents are much faster, and some sites offer RSS feed which makes things more convenient.

Of course, torrents can be faster. But are they always fast? Do you always get a fast torrent? No.

Code:
Here's a list of some news group providers and their retention counts:

Giganews ~ 200 days retention
NewsDemon ~ 85 days retention
Newshosting ~ 70 days retention
Power Usenet ~ 105 days retention
astraweb ~ 68 days retention
ThunderNews ~ 81 days retention

There is a difference between 2.5 mb/s and MB/s...are you counting that? Considering that people's upload speeds are capped, I am curious how torrents would be faster? Are all your torrent people in Korea?

I had a 100Mbit line when i would download from usenet in Korea. If I consider the fastest I could get IN Korea was something like 6MB/s (10MB/s = 100Mbit)...2.5MB/s is pretty fast from USA to Korea. That is 4gigs in about 20mins or less.

I'm impressed if your torrents can do that. Also, I wasn't aware that ISPs had 100mbit service in as many places. I was wired from the wall of my apartment into a lan with the ISP. Typically most cable modem or ADSL in Korea is capped at like 1.5MB/s. My wife's parents are maxed at like 800KB/s.

I can't get KT 100 where I am. So I've got 10. I get 800kbps-ish. Tops.

I understand the difference between 2.5 mb/s and 2.5 MB/s .. I usually hover around the 6 MB / s range for new shows. Upload speeds are capped certain countries yes.. (korea and Sweden are not). Also, you are not taking into account the people who are using seed boxes, which allow them to download and upload at a much faster rate (20 MB/s + for some).
As for all people being in Korea, that is irrelevant based on the pre-given reasons.

If one was not in Korea, then I would recommend a seed box and then ftp them using their home connection Smile

I still don't get your point:

Korea has no upload cap? In fact every service has a cap on how fast they can upload. Are you talking cap in bandwidth allowance? I know Korea doesn't cap how much you can d/l or u/l but the speed at which you can u/l or d/l is based on your ISP's service. A cable modem is going to be lucky to go 100-250KB/s upload in most cases.

Also if you are grabbing stuff from all over the world: it slows down considerablely outside Korea, depending on where you are grabbing it. Europe is considerablely slower to download from than say west coast USA. It isn't Korea's fault, they have a certain pipeline that leaves the country, it has to travel across the states before going to Europe etc.

This is why I wondered if many of your connections, or seeds as you put it are in Korea. Since Korea is wired with fiber optics, it would make sense to believe that people can get such speeds. This is why it is not irrelevant whether or not those you leech from are in Korea. I guess if you are leeching from 1000s of people world wide who had good connections you might get some fast speeds.

Curious how someone can upload at 20MB/s if 12.5MB/s=100Mbit. I didn't know any ISPs offered full duplex or gigabyte service. Please let me know if you know of any in Korea. I'd be interested in that service for sure.

I tried Torrents years ago and found them to be way too slow, hence why I am curious about the changes in speeds.

Usenet is fast. Giganews is expensive but probably has the fastest pipe out there. If you are crazy enough to spend say 40 bux a month and get 2 usenet services with 20 connections going, 3-5MB/s is very possible.

I was curious cuz I am after HD movies....they can run up to 8GB. I found a great private site and have been getting great speeds. 8GB file just finished in 2hrs 15min.....That is definitely the fastest I have ever downloaded anything!!!!

But thanks for everyones comments.....I think I will stick with this new site for now as it is really fast.
