Based on what my girlfriend is saying, I'm a little worried that the next Korean president may turn out to be a real idiot.

Lee Myung Bak, one of the favorites to win, has been saying some really stupid things. First, it was his insistence that Koreans should be taught Korean language IN ENGLISH. I saw that on here, and yes, that's what he's said. It's almost as if he's out in his own world or something.

His latest obsession is to build a canal across Korea.

That's right. A canal.

The worry that most Koreans have is that this man has gotten rich off of real estate, and that his plan is to purchase land, through family and friends, along this canal to increase their wealth.

Why does Korea need a canal?

Experts from abroad are shaking their heads, pointing out that Korea is a pretty small peninsula to be thinking of a canal.

Is he nuts, or just looking to make as much money off of his presidency as possible?

This will, most likely, be the next president of Korea.

The report about the canal being bad was stolen by people who dont like IMB and they made it worse than it sounds. He wants to build a canal but it will never get past in the government.

Becareful of what you read in the news about politicians here. The papers are pretty brutal about them.

IMB is a business man and not so much a politician. He'll most probably do a better job than anyone else and make the Korean economy better than it is now.

Are you insinuating that a Korean newspaper isn't telling the truth about someone??

Have a little faith. Laughing

Yeah, hard to know what isn't smoke and bull.

I think he's going to win. I wonder if he'll be as much of a joke as that virtual-communist lover Noh has been.

I don't think 'build a canal across Korea' is the right way to phrase it. If I remember correctly it would involve two modifications to existing rivers to join them all together.

Environmentally it could be a disaster of course.

I recall a couple years ago he thought that the government should be allowed to approve or disapprove of Korean musicians' right to perform. The guy's a closet fascist with a big hard-on for Jesus.

Born in Osaka, lived in Japan until age 4, then in Pohang, poor student went to the high school which didnt charge any tuition, collected garbage to pay for university, is aimed to become another of a recent trend of rags-to-riches presidents in korea

did not do military service... for medical reasons (respiratory? ... ha)

rose up from the trenches to top of Hyundai

Quote:
Lee's route to wealth was also made during the real estate boom that occurred in South Korea during the 1970s through the 1990s. Through a series of real estate speculations Lee amassed over US$40 million. By registering much of his properties under other people's names, Lee evaded existing tax laws that placed a heavy tax burden upon people who owned more than 1 or 2 properties.

early crookedness... good sign that more would come with his canal idea

plenty of evidence of him cheating in previous elections lost and won, sometimes fined, often charged

what a strange Korean man

most korean men are born and wholly raised in korea
most korean men do their miltary service
most korean men are not christian

all in all, i don't see where his popularity comes from

he probably won his party's nomination through backroom deals, of kickbacks and favortism promised

it's his party that will win, simply because people will want a change and some hope

sad

Oh, for f*ck's sake! A God-botherer? That, coupled with the fact that he's about as chaebol as you can get mean that he's a very bad choice indeed.

South Korea, not North Korea.

The candidates in both the major parties have been trying to out-Jesus each other for months.

most south koreans are not christian, a full 65-70% in the southernmost provinces aren't

but in seoul the fugures do top 40% and more importantly it matters to them as voters whether their candidate is religious

Hallelujah! Another country getting right with Jesus! Whenever I go to Seoul somehow I can just tell that there are many people doing the Lord's work. The feeling of fellowship is overwhelming!

I just hope that Big Brother Lee will ordain that more Korean nurses go abroad to share the unique Korean Christian Jung with heathens around the world, especially in areas of conflict like Afghanistan and Iraq.

I also hope that he can do something about those Catholics, pretending to be Christians...

Yet another post which gets turned into an anti-Christian free-for-all.

And all someone needed to do was mention that he's a Christian. Suddenly, that's the source of all of his problems. Rolling Eyes

Well said- I agree.

I do think it's very strange that he believes Korean history should be taught in English. I've been joking that his next policy will be to ban the Korean language altogether (my adult students enjoy that one).

He could make Korean and English both official languages. Then Koreans will speak perfect English in a matter of days.

If he builds that canal Korea will float off into the sea, and possibly off the edge of the world. Who will stop this evil-Christian overlord?
