I'm trying to get to 25 posts so I can use the p.m. feature. I don't have a good reason to use it right now, but I figure I might want to use it in the future, hence the posts now.

Trying to reach 25 posts. . . .

You must have written a minimum of 25 posts
before you can initiate contact with other members
by email or private message (PM). Sorry!

Why does one even need the PM feature? There are very few people here I seek to contact privately. In fact, I find the PM feature more of a bother, getting stupid questions from other users and weird homoerotic messages from Christians too afraid to come out of the closet.

Because you are a miserable old git who has no friends! Razz

I use the pm function practically every day and am always chitchatting with various posters.

I am also very annoyed about this new rule. I rarely post on the international forum, although I have been a member for a couple of years. I lurk, but rarely post. I have pmed more than I have posted. I can count on two hands the posts I have made there. But now I can no longer pm there. I will have to make almost 20 frivolous posts before I can begin pming there again. There is so little frivolous discussion to be had on those forums that this is no small feat. I am not in the mood to write trite little posts on serious threads, so I don't know when I will get around to it.

It annoys the crap out of me.

I'm fine with the 25-post minimum. The problem is, though, that it does encourage wonderful personalities like the OP to spam the forums with useless threads in order to reach 25. Once they hit 25 then they can PM other users with pressing questions like "How's Korea?" "Should I go to Korea or Japan?" "Are there any restaurants in Bundang?" and the like.

I send and receive PMs once in a while, and in most cases it's to offer information that is already on the forums. There are lots of cases, however, when I wish people would use the PM function more, especially when threads turn into childish, off topic bickering between two professional backpackers.

Under the new rule, people like Mr. Gesler will only fill up threads with meaningless posts, then start PMing. It's just going to take the BS in our PM inbox and but more BS from threads on top of that for us to deal with. Sparkling.

I also lost my pm capability. I mostly just used it when buying stuff from the buy sell trade forum.

Don't really want to start a new thread when I can just look up information that's been covered many times. But have to get to 25 posts so...

It used to be worse.
A few years ago, they posted the number of messages under the contributor's name.
Among the most prolific posters, there was a big race to see who could be first to reach 1000.
There was even a poll asking who we thought would earn that distinction.

If I recall correctly, The Great Wall of Whiner was the champion.

Ah! That's why Otis's DoS spams have vanished. I was wondering about that. Can we assume the OP is Otis?

I don't believe so. Otis would just dump his 25 posts in a single drunken stupor.

Kudos to the moderators for enforcing this rule.

But they haven't. He still spams me. Last time he was here a couple of nights ago under the guise of partick thistle. Perhaps you've simply fallen out of favour with him? Wink

Over 2 days he posted fairly innocuous and sensible posts, though I guessed it was him and had a bet with another poster that we'd be hearing delightful homoerotic filth from him that night. I won the bet.
