I'm curious about this. I've heard that in Canada, marijuana is not considered to be a big deal. I've also read that if a Canadian policeman catches a young person with it, they usually just take it from them and let them go. That's kind of a big difference from most parts of the USA, where they would put such a thing on your criminal record.

Is it not common for the police in Canada to give a misdemeanor or something that would even go on their police record?

To a Canadian, is having a "drug offense" on their criminal record something that's not a big deal, but if they were to try to get a job here, something they would find a big problem?

IF you are arrested for drugs in Canada it does go on your record. It will cause a problem here (if your job requests a CRC) and it also presents a problem going to the states as well (permanent ban for US entry).

Simple possession of marijuana usually only results in a fine but there is a mark on your criminal record. It is still a criminal code (federal) offence but is punishable on summary conviction and an indictment is not necessary.
