having played both american football and rugby it is clear that the team had some rugby training.

in american football, teammates block for the man with the ball. it is the essence of the game.

in rugby, teammates do not block for the man with the ball. it is forbidden. it is the essence of the game.

how trinity players reacted during this play was atypical of US football. instead of geting out there and "hitting somebody" they would drop back BEHIND the ball carrier, in position to take the ball.

i cannot see this a merely 14 consecutive, random, dumb luck ball transfers.

why don't US footballers do such more often? because the US game is rigidly formatted.the risk of giving up possession of the ball is to great. the instructions come in from the coach for every play. the big guys in american football are coached that if they ever get the ball to simply fall down with it. the fun has been removed that much from the game.
having played both, rugby was a heck of a lot more fun to play and watch. the big dollar US game is but a background for commercials. they want things controlled into small bites of action to keep us around for the beer, viagra and pick-up truck commercials.

probably a hail mary as a previous poster said. often attempted, often failed, but i believe it would have a much higher success rate than the laterals in the video.

think about it...at least there's only one chance for a bat-down or an interception rather than 14.

that was a great play...rugby players are not talented enough to execute a play like that, imo, there is an old saying 'the guys who could not hack it in american football are rugby players' Laughing

the winning touchdown play in an old Cal Bears game....where they lateralled the ball a number of times, etc... the guy ran in for the score and knocked down a few members of the marching band.

All the conditions were ripe for that play to work. The defence was a little soft in the beginning, and then they just seemed too tired to make any proper tackles. They were tackling with their arms and the offense just seemed better conditioned (maybe more motivated).

The same play would be very unlikely (but possible of course) to be successful in pro football because players in pro sports are simply much better defensively. They are better coached, and do a better job of containing and angling as it has become an exact science. The defence was quite sloppy in that video.
