I have a question as pertains to tattoo's within the work place. All things suggest that visible tattoos within the classroom aside from being unprofessional are also taboo of sorts. Do any of you here have visible tattoos? Is it a constant hassle to hide such tattoos? Is it even an issue within your classrooms? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Two of mine are visible when I roll up my sleeves. The students tend to gawp a bit at first and ask if they're real, then lose interest. I'm very open about having ten of them, if anyone's curious enough to ask. The professors in my department have seen them too. No one appears to care. My contract was renewed, and I've gotten broad hints that I'm wanted back when it expires. I think there are enough tattooed expats in Korea now that people have kind of figured this one out.

I have a kanji on my wrist. I had no problems with administration or parents about it. I actually had a matching stamp that the kids often begged to be stamped with. I think that there's more of an issue with size and content as opposed to tatoos merely being visible.

I have enough problem with my neck hair let alone ink. I still have one boy who is determined to grab it when I'm not looking.

I had a student who complained about another teacher's tattoo to me. Mine is on my foot and I keep it hidden during class.

I had a friend who was leaning over a kid's desk, exposing his chest under his collar. The student pointed at his heavily tattooed chest and said 'Teachah! You have marker pen on chest!'.

I had thought about getting one a few times before I came to Korea but now I'm quite glad I didn't.

I'll second that- I know a number of teachers with visible tattoos teaching at the uni level (myself included) as well as in public schools and no one seems to care at all- but we don't exactly have "love/hate" tattooed on our knuckles.

Very Happy

uhmm yeah PRagic...yet another insightful and constructive comment.

I wonder if being a gyopo and having tattoo's is viewed any differently than following under the "typical" westernized appearance and having tattoos?
