Did you ever watch a movie and think that the casting director made a huge mistake with an important role?

For me, three that come to mind quickly are:

Spiderman- Toby Maguire was a huge miscast. I didn't like any of the three movies but I believe it would have been more tolerable with someone like Topher Grace or that kid from the OC in the lead role. To a lesser degree, Kirsten Dunst's role of MJ should have been given to someone else as well (Natalie Portman, maybe)

Boogie Nights- Great movie but couldn't stand Julianne Moore. God, you're casting the role of a slightly older porn star and you can't find a hotter woman than her? Always bothered me.

Superman- Possibly the worst miscast ever when Margot Kidder was given the role of Lois Lane. Brought absolutely nothing to the table and was quite unattractive. Never could believe that Superman would give up his powers for her. Terrible, terrible casting.

As Spidey, yes, but he did the geeky Parker dead-on. Same with Michael Keaton, his Bruce Wayne was good, but his Batman was off. Kilmer was the opposite. Killer Bats, but sucky Wayne. Clooney was bad on all counts. Topher Grace as VENOM?? Kill me.

As bad as Ghost Rider was, the role of Blackheart was HORRIBLY miscast. The creepy video dude from American Beauty is the most powerful and most evil being on earth? GMAFB!

absolutely agree on spiderman.

i think leonardo dicaprio has been miscast into a few roles too - the aviator and gangs of new york both instantly come to mind.

keanu reeves in the gift.

Any film that's ever decided to hire Will Ferrell.

And shanghai moon, that helmet Owen Wilson. In fact any film he's ever done.

Any role that has ever been played by anyone other than Bruce Campbell. Including female roles.

to the OP,

Julianne Moore was cast in Boogie Nights for 2 reasons:
1- she's a great actress.
2- she very closely resembles Annette Haven, one of the first true porn queens of the 70's. It's a coin toss as to who was the first queen of porn- her or Seka.

Also, pornstars in the 70's weren't very good looking, for the most part. As one writer put it, 70's pornstars looked like Patti Smith on a huge coke bender. This goes for females and males.
It wasn't until the 80's that it was expected that the majority of them should be hot.

Lastly, I think Julianne Moore is hot for a mature woman!

STAR WARS I

STAR WARS II

STAR WARS III

Even the CGI characters were miscast. What in the world did they do to Yoda? Poor little fella...at least he got a stamp in his honor.

Benicio: I second the Julianne Moore thing. I'd be all over her in a heartbeat, but we both know where I stand on the 'cougar' thing.

Miscast leads; Nicolas Cage in "Captain Corelli's Mandolin". Atrocious decision.

Meg Ryan in "The Doors"

Joachin Phoenix in "Gladiator"

Janeane Garofalo in just about anything.

Leonardo Dicaprio in "The Beach"

They messed this one up so bad because they were trying to appeal to the teen audience. Messed up what could have been a great portrayal of a great book.
They also messed up the story by adding the love triangle.
This totally killed the tension that was shown in the book.

Anyway, I always think Dicaprio and Brad Pitt are best when they are playing ugly people.
Example: What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Gangs of New York, Kalifornia, Fight Club, True Romance.

They mess up when they play the pretty boy too much.

What was that one where Denzel Washington was investigating whether to give Meg Ryan's dead helicopter pilot the Medal of Honor?

It sucked.

Meg Ryan was just not believable as a tough pilot who gives her life for her crew in the thick of battle.

Yeah, and Matt Damon as the post-traumatic heroin addict?
Didn't believe it for a second!

Title- "Courage Under Fire"

that's just it with dicaprio though - i think his only roles should be the pretty boy roles. despite playing in gangs of new york, he didn't gain many male fans - people liked the movie but would've liked the protagonist to be someone else. the aviator as well - i would've liked the movie more if it wasn't pretty boy leo playing a disheveled hughes. on the plus side, the fact he plays those roles makes it easier to get my GF to watch those movies with me.

on the other hand, i think pitt has a lot of male fans earned from films like fight club, kalifornia, seven, etc.
