I think you've been watching too much CSI.
I was always under the impression that fingerprint checks was to insure that you are who you say you are. |

it seems to me, law enforcement agencies should be able to run you through the system and give you your criminal history without this. I'm pretty sure that cops do this whenever they pull you over, right? If you have a criminal history, you'd be in the system already, but if you don't there would be nothing to compare them to, right? what's going on here? I mean, the only reason I can think of for them wanting your fingerprints is to PUT you in the system, and check you against any unknown prints that are wanted in connection with unsolved crimes.
imagine: in 1985 you stayed in a hotel room in Reno, nevada, paid cash. the next day, you check out, and continue pn your journey... then another guest checks into your room, and at some point is murdered. The CSI team lift your print from the toilet flusher, but when they run it, there's no match becasue you're not in the system. That print is however entered into the system waiting for the day a match is found. fast foward to 22 years later. ... after multiple careers you've ended up in korea teaching English. Immigration now requires you to do a criminal records check on yourself. you think it's a hassle, but whatever, you know you haven't ever been arrested. maybe you're wondering if unpaid speeding tickets might be on there, or perhaps tax evasion, not that you've ever lied on your taxes, just that you haven''t filed in forever cause you live overseas. then it comes back.... you are wanted for questioning in connecion with blah blah blah in Reno Nevada in 1985.
do you still get issued your visa? |
Fingerprints are just to verify that the Criminal Check being done is of the person requesting it.
If you are currently wanted in Reno, and there's a Federal Warrent out for your arrest, they'll probably appreciate knowing where you are. If it's not a Federal crime you are wanted for questioning on, it won't turn up on an FBI check. FBI checks only turn up Federal crimes. |

Not so sure about that. If I had a warrant out for a state crime somewhere, wouldn't it come up?
If not, that's pretty lame and defeating the point really. |

maybe you're right. I guess warrants would come up nationwide, and from reading here have found out sex crimes and felonies come up on FBI checks, but a few people say that midemeanors don't. At least that's what I learned from reading Dave's. |

my state requires notarized signatures... which does the same thing. i had to go to the US Embassy to have mine notarized since I was already abroad. |

If you've been in Korea long enough, you would know that fingerprinting foreigners on work visas was SOP. I've had mine done at least twice before they discontinued the practice. |

Every Korean has their finger print on their ID cards. It is also held on computer.
I got one of those we name stamp wooden things for transferring car ownership without having to visiy 2 gu offices.
To register my stamp in the system, the put my finger print, stamp mark and ID card on 1 file on the PC. |

... how does it prove who you are if your fingerprint isn't on record anywhere? My fingerprint is on file at the hospital I was born at, and that's it. It's not like there's some international database with all 6 billion+ people's fingerprints on it (although certain politicians would just loooove if that happened). |

You would think this would make the K-police's job easier, wouldn't you? |

Databasing all free citizens' fingerprints opens the door to major abuse.
JAPAN brought that policy in when they owned Korea & its resident SERFS |
