all of sudden my external speakers went dead but i can hear sound from the speakers in my monitor. i checked audio properties and could hear things again through the monitor.

is this a problem with my onboard sound on my motherboard or is it just a set of speakers that just died?

it could be a wide variety of problems.

-You may need to install the driver for the sound card
-Your speakers may not be plugged in
-Your soundcard may have taken a dump and now you need to replace it
-your onboard sound female end may have taken a dump and now you need to get a 3rd party sound card
-you may need to reinstall the sound driver for the motherboard
-your speakers took a dump and now you need new ones

hmm...Do you have a sound card? In other words, how are the speakers connected to the PC?

Do you have the speakers on mute?

Have you tried plugging in some headphones or another set of speakers?

Troubleshooting something like this is a process of elimination. Start with the easy things.

think it may be a short as now the speakers are fine and i didnt do a think.

may be time to get new speakers though, these are 3 years old

it is probably the speaker wire. My wife's computer speakers have a short somewhere in the wire (they have to be plugged in a certain way). It may be time for new wires or if youc an't replace the wires, new speakers.
