I just found a contact through my advisor at school who works with a school in china (fuzhou - near Taiwan). I'm still a student working on my BS, and was looking for a summer 2005 position for a couple of months. This is definitely a decent school through a trustworthy connection. I would have to pay for my ticket over there and back, and the rest is gravy...food, housing, a little bit of pocket money, or maybe staying with a host family!

But it's in china...

the whole purpose of me doing something like this over the summer would be for the experience, and to see if I was cut out for it. I think it would be a good idea to do it, and possibly take off a semester and teach half a year, rather than 3 months.

Just wanted some other opinions of what people thought of the whole idea, or china for that matter...

thanks

peace,

First, I think there is a China forum on Dave's Job Discussion Forum (see above). http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewforum.php?f=9.

Try Taiwan if you're not into China.

If you want airfare you'd best try Korea.

Do it. From the way you describe it, it can be as short as a couple of months. It would be cool to spend some time in China, sounds like a good experience. If you're not into it, it's short anyway.

Yea, you don't have to come to Korea, just because it was where you initially wanted to go. You're young; go for the programs that'll give you experience in something cool, if possible.

china would be interesting, but you will make almost no money and probably go into debt as the result of it. why not work in taiwan, korea or japan and travel around china during your vacations?

I think he's just looking for something to do during a summer vacation to get some experience, and visit Asia, but preferably Korea.

l0ckx, since you seem to be hellbent on coming to Korea, I might suggest trying to teach in a summer camp. It would be illegal, but for you it might be worth it if you can handle the risk. You don't have a BA, so you don't qualify for an E2 visa for a normal yearlong teaching contract, but a lot of the summer camps hire teachers illegally on tourist visas anyway.

You might be able to get your airfare paid, plus actually make some money on the deal.

You certainly wouldn't be the only person teaching over here illegally.

Son deureo,

yeah, I am just looking for something over the summer for the experience and to see some of Asia.

the school in china will not pay me, however I will have everything I need given to me, with the exception of airfare.

Im not completely hell-bent, however Korea was first preference...I was thinking maybe I could take 2 weeks off and visit Korea during the summer. Anybody know anything about traveling to china then Korea regarding visas or best way of transportation?

Zyzyfer was right...Im young and I have the rest of my life to travel and teach in other countries. This would be the best thing for me...experience. Better yet, knowing that I will be in a good school, with people I know so the culture shock or feelings of being overwhelmed wouldn't be that harsh.

TECO - sorry I posted on this board and not the Chinese or Taiwanese, I just registered for them now...thanks

peace,

If you are a student working on your bachelors.. do it for 3 months. Thats more than enough time. Six months is a long time.. 3 months is an ideal experience.

After you graduate you can get stuck on one-year contracts like the rest of us. I wish I was offerered 3-month contracts.. thats all good times right there. 6-month means you'll have a month or two of doldrums and boredom in there.

Personally, I'd avoid the summer camps. There are always so many problems posted about people not getting paid after working many hours, and immigration busting them. Very risky, in my opinion.

Immigration knows when it's prime season for such camps, and they step up efforts to bust places.

derrek,

agreed. The last thing i want is to be deported from a country i eventually wish to reside in. God only knows how hard it would be to get back into the country after something like that.
