Ok so i am going on a spending spree and am considering a PS3. First i have some questions:
1. I was told in my local Hi Mart that the going rate is about 520,000. Can it be had cheaper at Yongsan?
2. Does it have an English language option?
3. Has the 720p Blu-Ray problem been solved yet? I read that originally the PS3 would only output BR movies at 1080p or 480p. Has the firmware now been updated?
4. Does the Korean model play PS2 games? If so, only the Asia region?
I appreciate all comments. |

| I'm going this weekend and I'll let you know what I find out about prices in Yongsan (용산). I think you can usually get a discount if you pay cash. The other thing to think about is if you want to get the 40 gig one that comes out on the Nov 11th. The price for that one is set at 348,000. Then again the new model also doesn't support ps2 games. Anyway its upto you on what you want to get, I'm personally gonna go get one this weekend so I can have the ps2 game playability. |

Yes, the 720p problem was solved many updates ago. Was considering the same thing myself, and wondered about it. The problem was because a few TVs didn't offer certain resolutions for the PS3 to default to, so it would just default to the lowest common resolution, which was often Standard TV.
It's been fixed. Thinking about getting one, too.
And yeah, all PS2 games are region-coded with original PS2 region codes. Does anyone know if Korean and Japanese PS2 games are the same region? |

I'd be interested to see how much you can get one for. I'm not too bothered about the hard drive space, 40GB will be plenty, but PS2 compatability would be nice. |

| It outputs well with 720p for both games and BR discs. |

Will a PS3 from the states play games/blue-ray movies from Korea?
Would I need a mod? Is one out yet?

Region-coding for Blu-ray is different than with regular DVD. You will be able to play all USA blu-rays in Korea (and Japanese BR discs). Likewise, a Korean PS3 will work in the USA. They are all in the same region.
Keep in mind that a Korean PS3 is on 220volts. There is some dispute as to whether or not the transformer inside the box can handle both 110 or 220 volts. I saw a photo of the insides of one PS3, which definitely had a step-down internal transformer to handle both, but the box and literature from Sony said it didn't. My guess is that some units are made with different parts. I personally wouldn't want to make a wrong guess!
A USA PS3 will NOT be able to play Korean PS2 games OR Korean standard DVDs. A Korean PS3 will NOT be able to play USA PS2 games or USA standard DVD movies.
The PS3 follows the original region coding on these older games and formats.
Knowing all of this, I'd say you're better off going with the cheaper $400 PS3, which doesn't have the backwards compatibility of the PS2 titles, anyway. That's what I want to go with when I get one. I read that they have better cooling, too. |
