HIV likely entered the United States through a single infected immigrant from Haiti, scientists said Monday.
Led by University of Arizona biologist Michael Worobey, scientists analyzed stored blood samples from early AIDS patients, said Reuters, discovering the strain of HIV most common in North America and Europe was first brought to Haiti by a single infected person from central Africa around 1966.
The person then entered the U.S. likely through a large American city around 1969, said the study.
The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests HIV infections were likely occurring years before AIDS was recognized as a disease in 1981.
"It is somehow chilling to know it was probably circulating for so long under our noses," Worobey told Reuters.
"That one infection would have become two, and then it doubles again and the two becomes four. So you have a period probably a fair number of years where you're dealing with probably fewer than a hundred people who are infected."
The virus is commonly spread through unprotected sex and injection drug use.
Researchers believe AIDS originated in African chimpanzees, later spreading to humans.
Outside of Africa, Haiti has the highest HIV infection rate in the world. Close to four per cent of adults aged 15-49 are infected with HIV, estimates the United Nations. |

Which body fluids can transmit the HIV virus, and which ones don't?
Blood, pre-cum, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk all contain high concentrations of HIV, and all have been linked to transmission of the virus.
Saliva, tears, sweat and urine can have the virus in them, but in such small concentrations that nobody has ever been infected through them. However, if any body fluid is visibly contaminated with blood, the risk of transmission exists.

I don't think a bite transmitted the virus. |

I was being facetious. That scenario is so ludicrous as to be beyond belief.
However, even more incredible is how the virus has two completely different epidemiologies in Africa and America. I once asked a medical researcher at a conference if she could explain that bizarre phenomenon. In other words, what I was asking was why in America was it predominantly a disease of gay men but in Africa of heterosexuals. She was unable to do so. |

Even my cursory reading on this topic answers this pretty easily: little use of condoms, high level of partners, more children born with it, many who are carriers and either don't know or don't care. |

Thank you. The epidemiology is different for that reason, but the majority of people around the globe who have the virus are Straight. It spread rapidly in American and European cities because of a lack of knowledge and various government's refusal to address the gay community (and the IV drug community) in a serious and fair way.
HIV is probably the first truly "globalized" disease. By that I mean its rapid spread is a direct result of the prosperity, travel and globalization that resulted from WWII. Without WWII there would be no gay culture and there would have been no baby boom/move to the cities/global travel phenomenons. More than any thing, intercontinental travel by US/Allied soldiers and wealth spawned this disease.
And yes HIV came from monkeys. There is a simian version of HIV (I think called SHIV but not sure) and it was always spreading in Africa but it wasn't until post WWII that we saw roads and airports and poor jungle/inland Africans head to the cities on the coasts. As well, a special immigration deal between Congo and Haiti is how HIV probably first spread to N.America.

I find it interesting how homosexuals are blamed for AIDS but in a sense it was homosexuals who alerted us to AIDS. Clearly the disease would get into the population via blood transfusions and other means. However, it was because there was a very rare disease clustered in a small, homogenous population (gay communities in San Francisco) that got the medical community to start looking for the cause.
One wonders how long it would have circulated before we figured it out. One also wonders what else is circulating that we don't know about. |

Yeah, well Gaetan Dugas having sex with a thousand men in a single year didn't help. |

No one is defending him. Assuming he did knowingly spread the disease then he was a despicable man, a murderer. It is important though, that the proper history of the disease be told, not just to protect us homosexuals, but to help understand the transmission and evolution of the virus.
These groups and the nutbars who inhabit them belong on the same boat as the 9/11 "truthers". They are nuts, nothing more, nothing less. |
