Anyone been to this region? Particularly the beaches along Bulgaria, Romania or Ukraine?

Constanta and Odessa. Prepare to be underwhelmed. Its good for the locals but its not world-class. Good for a few days and there is a beach scene as much as it can be. Visit Yalta and Sochi. The Bulgary beach town is supposed to be a good scene.

I've been to the region on two separate occasions- one time Ukraine and one time Bulgaria and Romania. In Ukraine I went to Odessa and the nearby beaches for 4 or five days and Sevastapol just for a day. Cold water which also looked dirty with funny looking algae in both places. The beaches were very ordinary. That said in Odessa there's a nightlife centre - open air nightclubs next to the sea/ beach. You have to get a tram from 'downtown' Odessa to get there but at night the atmosphere was great! Apparently the sea in both places is very dirty but Yalta and environs is meant to be much better. Unfortunately I couldn't get there in the Summer- my pushing in skills couldn't compete with the localsa the lines for getting tickets didn't seem to budge. This was back in 2000 though so probably changed since then (for the worse? Smile).

In1999 went to Romania and Bulgaria- North of COnstanta saw a dead dolphin and there was an oil slick on the beach. The beaches and water were very ordinary too close to the Danube delta. Went to a few beaches beach south of Constanta- (can't remember the names) which were much better but nothing to write home about. Accomodation wasn't too cheap even at that time (for the quality) but luckily managed to bargain directly wuth a hotel owner and got a double room for about 8 dollars a night- as opposed to 25$+ rental agencies wanted.

Bulgaria also has ordinary beaches but it was enjoyable anyway just to see a different culture/ food etc. Bulgaria and Romania have sublime hiking and nice cities but their coastline is probably the least of their tourist drawcards IMHO.

Bulgaria is the worst country visited to date. Just didn't like the people, the food, atmosphere or country in general. Why not visit Turkeys awesome beaches instead?
