Scott, thanks for commenting on my post. I did seems a little naive in that post, but I know the score going on here, talked to lots of young students both male and female and had many conversations with the barmaids and bartenders. I guess what I am getting at, is that the playing aspect of Korean society is endemic to the whole. I don't believe any Korean girl when they say they are innocent or don't have fun. The whole dating seen from late high school until you get married, and even after, for your average Korean can be filled with lots of partying, and sex, if that is their wish. You know this. And you know that the image Koreans try to up hold, is that this doesn't go on. I guess I am trying to say that just because some chick works in a bar it doesn't make her anymore or any less of being a na-la-li, than any other young women. Some of the biggest debauchers for women I have met in Korea have acted all na-soeng, while some of the biggest teases in Korea I have met have had lots of aggyo, but really didn't put out for their oppa. Korean men have backed me up on these observations too. I try to see the barmaid as a human being, and not just a party toy, but the objectification or myth making of these women, while fun, isn't really right. |

Scott, I know what you are saying and I think I understand your mind. It is true, by default, that any chick working at a bar isn't some over controlled, daddies little girl. She is more free to do this kind of work, which a lot of Korean women wouldn't consider doing, which does show, and you are right, a certain liberal, or open mindedness about her character. Working the barmaid, though while seemingly an obvious choice to look for a date, isn't the best idea, and that is only my opinion. Barmaids have, as my barmaid friends, and bartenders will point out, a kind of 'fan club' as they make the joke. Their fan clubs are the regulars who come to visit with them, or some new customer who likes talking her up. These chicks have some of the biggest bases to choose from, and only the new barmaid doesn't understand this. Unless their flavor is foreign, working the barmaids is basically a no gain effort. It does happen, but the less obvious choices are where foreigners meet Korean women for dating. All that aside, I like the barmaids in Korea. They are good for practicing your Korean, learning about Korean society, somebody to talk to while having a beer. And for the single or uncommented guy, a chance, an opportunity, that is what sells the beer. |

I will agree. If you have good language skills here in Korea, which I don't even come close to having, you can have lots of fun meeting lots of new and exciting people. |

Well, hold there. I seem not to be a magnet. But I will agree, it is when you are out and kind of minding your own business, that it seems like you become a safe environment for females to make small talk with you. I have found, (I am pretty much out of the scene now, have a girlfriend) that when going out with a foreign friend(s) and hoping to meet the locals, that three is a crowd. It becomes too intimidating for them. Two is absolute necessary and the perfect sized group for meeting the locals. |

weatherman, what you say is true. bar maids have lots of choices and are paid to act kindto the customers. of course the women who are always at the bar who aren't paid to be there and be nice to the customers are the better choice to chat up. |
How is that different from our respective home countries? |

Watch out for these women if you be a man. They will work you up and come on to you, but are mostly just teases after your money and. . .
sometimes may rip you off. And watch out for them if they want to come to your house. And, keep a low profile if there's a pimp coming around. And don't be an American soldier who got so pissed he strangled one. No, keep entirely away. |

Why would a bar attract workers who are gay? What's in the job that makes it good for gays.
Some of the girls are holding down two jobs. Met a girl working in a bar who was working as a librarian at a university during the day. Others were using it as a stop gap job until they found something else. |

Interesting thread...
A lot of the younger girls/guys that I saw working at bars actually owned the bars. This was about hmm 5-6 yrs ago when I was bar hopping all the time in Apkujong Dong.
Guys always had hot korean girls with them, and the one girl who owned this bar used to hit on my roommate all the time. No idea if they did get it on.
About the people around Itaewon: IMO those hostesses/waitresses are 100% pure grade skank. I wouldn't touch one of those chicks with a dirk diggler dildo! In fact i've always hated Itaewon for two reasons: GIs and skanky Korean girls.
IMO Apkujong and Kangnam are far better places to hang out...but that is just my taste in bars. |

That one is going in the brain vault. Nearly spit my coffee all over the computer screen.
I've noticed that success between bargirls and male foreigners is extremely limited. This may be due to the fact that once a foreigner becomes attached they get extremely jeleous as their little piece of Korean ass gets hit up every night by a variety of equally horny and drunk men. Its a vicious cycle I have seen a lot here.
Guy gets the bargirl, they have a few rumpy bumpys, he gets a bit attached, a guy(or many guys) hit on her, he cracks it and she goes home with a different guy. Good luck |

Hahaha nicely put there indeed.. :)
I was considering becoming a bartender, but perhaps at a tourist haunt like a good hotel or some such. Bilingual ability plus the fact I can mix up a few popular drinks made it a pretty good option.
Never went through with it though.
