does anyone know if the last part of this statement is true, specifically if you want to renew your visa you have to go home?
s of December 2007, the E2 visa process will be changed.

All new teachers will be required to do the following (in addition to current visa procedures):

1) A criminal background check
2) A medical check
3) An interview with a consol at their local Korean Consulate

Furthermore, for all teachers currently in Korea who want to renew their contracts:

1) There will be no more VISA runs to Japan. All VISAs must be obtained in the teachers' home countries.
2) VISA will not be renewable in Korea. At the completion of one year, if the teacher decides to stay at their current school, they must return to their home country and obtain their VISA there.

That sounds pretty fricked up. But, I do always go home after each contract, so no problem for me.

I second, from where did this information come? It's completely illogical (yes, I know this is Korea, where logic comes to ....you know) but gosh, it's kinda silly too, and Koreans don't specialize in silly...

Again, it is from a recruiter but I do want to find out if it is true or if someone is blowing sweet smoke.

If that's really true, one guy named Christopher Paul Neil deserves to burn in the seven fires of hell, while being flayed and rolled in salt and rotten kimchi for prompting this new policy. Don't give a shit about the little kids.

On another note, F2ers will be kings.

But I somehow doubt immigration can be that moronic, so let's wait and see.

Koreans aren't morons like you guys like to think they are. If that policie's really on the table, they're looking to reduce the number of foreign teachers here period. Maybe someone wants all those English Hogwans taken out?

Koreans aren't, not all of them, but the BS policies and laws they make are often rediculous.

Do you read the Korean news? Politicians are trying to INCREASE the number of foreign teachers.

If that's true than thankfully my visa's good until August 2008. I can sit back, relax, and watch everything go to shit.

same here. Most koreans do not need english. Look at japan and china, two massive economies with people who do not speak English.

Learning english is a waste of time for most students. Teaching English will not help korea compete with Japan and china. Teaching science, math, korean language, history, etc., are more important for korea's future than english.

Koreans need to concentrate on "CONTENT" English, the sort of english that is learned at graduate schools of engineering, science, law, etc. Obviously, such jargon/professional english is not and can not be taught in hakwons or in secondary or even at the university level.

koreans are unfortunately wasting their time and their money learning English.
