I've just moved into my brand new language lab with electronic whiteboard which is lovely and smells of plastic and wood. I was asking for some notice boards so I can start to decorate it when I was told that actually is there anything else I want because: there is still a budget of 5000 man won just for me!!!
The thing is I have no idea what to do with this money. They want to buy computers but I don't really see what advantage they would bring other than something to occupy the hooligans. I think electronic dictionaries for everyone would be a good idea. What else can I buy? And where do I look for it on the web?
I'm a new teacher so I'm happy to just practice my skills and learn my trade at the minute. I'm not dull so I don't need tricks to engage people. I very rarely use audio-visual materials 'cos I think its just lazy. I don't really see how spending all this money is going to help these kids learn. But the money is there...
Should I ask for a new car?

I have never heard of audio visual materials being described as 'lazy'.

Get a data projector so you can do ppt presentations.
Why? Easy to prep. at home or office, and once they are done you can save 'em on a mem. stick and re-use them in future. Plus you can have text and short (1-2 min) vid. clips to help make yr pt, and break up the longer classes a wee bit. Giving the students a 1-2 min "rest" really helps focus.

I already have an electronic whiteboard attached to the PC with DVD underneath and a PA system all attached to the internet.

Projector TV and screen and paper dictionaries, along with a copy of every EFL textbook in the bookstore. And enough left over to treat your favourite male colleagues to a night at the rooms salon.

ask for an ELMO. If you don't know, it's like an overhead projector, except it uses a camera instead of light. This allows you to stick anything you want under it. It's great for papers (won't have to scan them into a computer or make transparencies), photos, and small objects.

I would get sets of flashcards, game cards (maybe 8 sets so the kids can play in gropus of 4), ESL textbooks, subscribtion to some good websites, board games, and soem general supplies like pencils, markers, scissors, glue, etc. I'm so jealous. I have to be go for a paperclip at my school.

You got a lot of money there. I would not just think about yourself but all the other teachers who will come after you.

I would start an English language teaching library for you, future Native-speaking teachers and even the Korean teachers (though it should only be for communicative materials).

I would buy books on how to teach, grammar, children's books (stories etc...) books on games and activities, actual games.

Keep us informed. Let us know what you finally decide. It should be interesting.

I second the reading books! Get graded readers: you can do some research and find published levels of graded readers in many genres.

And A/V is not lazy. You need just need to have ideas about how to use it...
