I have an 80 gb IPOD and just gotta say that the file management is a real pain in the butt. I loaded it up and took it on vacation. While on vacation I wanted to add some files (Thai MP3 lessons). It was incredibly difficult. Took 8 hours and destroyed the file names on all my videos. Adding files is almost impossible once you leave your home "synced" computer.
And deleting files is not possible as well! After I watch episode 5, I want to delete that episode from the IPOD so that I know episode 6 is the next one to see. Not possible with IPOD. I have to keep a small sheet of paper with the IPOD to know that I am on episode 5 of this show and episode 7 of that show.
I would get something that is simple "drag and drop" to load the files, and has a "delete file" function.

IPODS and the Itunes software they use are utter crap.

Why do people continue to buy these overpriced pieces of crap when there are excellent Korean-made alternatives??

There are many video players that are better than the iPod. The original question was about music, and I maintain that the iPod and iTunes are the easiest way to manage and navigate a large music collection on a PMP.

iTunes is incredibly difficult to manage music.

At first its a pain in the ass. I must've spent a few days organizing my entire collection, getting rid of duplicate songs, wrong spellings, capitalizations, fixing album art, etc...

After that, its butter. It was good because iTunes actually forced me to get off my lazy butt and organize my music.

I think if your music collection consists mainly of stuff pirated from the internet, then yes, itunes isn't going to do a great job organizing it without some help. Things probably work a little more smoothly if you do your own rips or buy from itunes.

True, I hadn't thought of that. Back in the Napster days (when I did my bulk of illegal downloading) the ID3 tags were sometimes really screwed up.

Suppose you have some pirated songs how do you get them on there with no problem. I am considering buying the 80 gig classic. The Itouch sounds cool, but it very overpriced for the amount of memory you get.
If it were selling for 250 for the 8 gigs, I would consider it. Is the 80 gig's video that bad? I have never had an MP3 player before. Any of you guys out there satisfied with the classic 80 gig player?

It's not really that difficult...once you import all your music (again, very easy--just click Advanced-Consolidate Library), you may have to type in the Artist where the Song Name might be, or vice versa. It's not difficult, it can just be time consuming. Just like the above poster said though, once that's done, it's incredibly easy to find exactly what you're looking for, as opposed to looking through files and folders.

Both my iPods are dinosaurs. I have a 3rd gen 10GB for my day trips, and a 40GB that I keep all my music on. If I were to get a new one, I'd probably go with the 80GB Classic too. The video isn't bad, but it's a small screen, and it can't compete with some of the dedicated PMPs out there that play video. Again, you have to weigh the UI against the video quality. If you want a music player primarily, but if you only have a couple GB of songs and you want primarily a video player, get an iPod Touch or an Archos, Cowon, etc.

Getting the music on is no problem. Use iTunes, just import the folders and sync. However, because your collection will have been ripped by a bunch of different guys, the id3 tags won't match each other, which basically makes browsing your songs a pain in the ass unless you take some effort to fix the problem.

I did recently purchase the 80 gig classic. I formerly had a 30 gigabyte Cowon X5L which was great while it lasted (sadly, it is now deceased, though no fault of the player.) What I liked about the X5 was the sound quality, which I found to be top-notch. Oh, also, my wife has a Cowon D2 which to me has excellent SQ as well.

The classic just didn't sound as good to my ears as the Cowons. And, I should mention that I don't consider myself an audiophile by any means. So, I figure there are 3 possibilities. A)the Classic has poor(er) sound quality B)my ears are just used to Cowons so that's what I prefer C) it's all pyschosomatic and they both sound relatively the same.

Not exactly the most helpful advice, I know, which is why I would urge you to try to listen to the classic before you buy it and see if it suits you.

As for the screen, I found it adequate, if not outstanding. I watched about 5 hours of video on a bus ride while I had it and it didn't cause much noticeable eye-strain. I think the D2 has a bit better color, however.

Finally, I realized that I am not the type of person that needs to carry his entire music collection with him at one time, so I ended up returning the classic and have an Ipod Touch on order. We'll see how that goes.

Just a question...are you sure when you imported the songs into your iPod, iTunes wasn't downsampling your music to a lower bitrate than was on your Cowon?

To clarify, the music I used as my SQ barometer was unconverted by iTunes.

One reason I want to buy an IPOD is because Korean models are actually extremely overpriced for the memory you get. So many of my students spent 200,000 won for a fraction of the gigabytes. What Korean model gets close to having a lot of memory like that at such a good price? Plus, the IPOD is an English. I would assume Korean MP3 players are in Korean. What other brands are there besides the IPOD with English or that are from America or Japan? One of my co-workers has the 80 g classic, and she hasn't voiced any complaints from what I know.

One alternative, if you can get your hands on one, is the new Zune 80. Same price as the iPod Classic 80 gig, but with a bigger screen and supposedly better sound quality. The only downside is that they probably won't be available in Korea, so you'd have to have one shipped over.
