Quote:
Women-only subway cars will be reintroduced in Seoul next year as part of the local transportation authority's efforts to crack down on sexual harassment of female passengers, officials said Wednesday.

The Seoul Metro and the Seoul Metropolitan Transit Corp., which operate eight subway lines in the Seoul metropolitan area, said they will designate the cars in 2008 on all of their lines.

"Seoul's subway system first introduced the women-only cars in 1992, but the system was immediately suspended after undergoing some operational problems," an official at the Seoul Metro said.

"This time, two cars of each subway train on all the lines will be designated exclusively for women. There might be some side effects, but the advantages of the cars in terms of crime prevention will surpass the disadvantages. We will work to reduce the negative effects," said the official.

He said the subway operators aim to maximize the convenience of female passengers by providing some amenities in their exclusive cars.

Good idea? Bad idea?

I don't really like the idea. If there's a groping problem, put cameras in the cars and anti-harassment posters up.

Good idea. As much as I'll miss checking out the hotties, no one deserves to get groped (yes, I maintain that looking is fair game).

I wonder what kind of 'amenities' the women-only cars will have? I can think of lots of wisecrack guesses, but I don't think they'd go over too well.

Pointless. Some groper can just wear a wig and hop on the women only car. Chances are, if someone was being groped in a women's only car, everyone in the car would just turn the other way.

Ah crap. That's going to make hitting the stair/escalators for some exits/interchanges worse. For example, Myeong Dong you want to be at the front/end depending on direction. The line 4/6 interchange at samgakji you need to be front/back. Line 4/2 at Dongdaemoon you need to be at the back/front.

This is very embarrassing for me....long a proponent of how soft and safe Korea is.

It's alarming and embarrassing for the country that Seoul should even consider such a venture.

Personally - and please don't call me names if you disagree - my observations tell me women-only cabs are excessive, alarmist and totally unnecessary.

Women will obviously have a choice. The ones that take the mens' cars will be be thought of as promiscuous.

By observations you mean dressing up or living as a woman here in Seoul? Honestly, you're a bright lad, but sometimes your polemics on this board are nought but tripe.

Exactly...instead of teaching men not to be disgusting assholes, let's herd women into seperate cars like cattle because, ya know, it's their fault, really.

can this f'in country come up with original answers to ANYTHING without reverting to stale confucianism? SEGREGATE SEGREGATE SEGREGATE!!!

I'm sure that some will applaud this until twenty years later when they realize that the rest of the modern world has moved on in terms of gender relations and Korea is, once again, stuck in the past.

Sorry if that's coming out harsh but I'm having a baaaddd "korea week" .

I don't see the problem with "segregating". We do it with bathrooms, don't we? Give women the choice, and we will soon see how much of a need for it there is, by how many women choose to use it. I bet ridership from male passengers goes down, from all the ajoshi's who will have to find another way to get their jollies.

You're missing the point even though you just said it; they will simply FIND OTHER WAYS TO GET THEIR JOLLIES. If a person has the will to go groping, they'll just do it elsewhere. This stops nothing.

What makes me angry is that this is a good opportunity for Korea to enlighten women as to how to become more street smart, and how to make men more compassionate.

But no, let's just huddle them away unless "escorted". Burkas next.

Also, on the bathroom thing, those are indeed segregated but many rapes happen in them. Actually, more often than not, if I'm reading about a rape in the paper/online in Korea, they seem to happen *a lot* in bathrooms here. So, you're analogy is pretty false.

You are right though, about letting the market decide. I hope Korean women wise up and decide not to give up freedom for secur...oh hell, I'm talking about Korea. Just hand them burkas, piss on their legs, and tell them it's raining.

rather than being completely sexist and having women only cars, perhaps the korean metro authority could have guards patroling the train. it would be beneficial in a number of ways:

1. stop the as.s.wipes from groping "innocent" korean women

2. stop the as.s.wipes who sell everything from cucumber slicers to 1950s korean music

3. stop the as.s.wipes who go to sleep on the seat and take up enough space for 5 people

4. stop the as.s.wipes who insist on reading the free newspaper, wide open, even though there's barely enough room to stand shoulder to shoulder

5. stop the as.s.wipes who let their kids pull down their pants and piss into a cup, rather than get off the train and use the restrooms

6. stop the as.s.wipes who stand in the doorways for 12 stations, blocking everyone who wants to get off.

7. stop the as.s.wipes who sit in the elderly/pregnant/disabled seats, when these as.s.wipes are clearly not elderly, disabled or pregnant

8. stop the as.s.wipe old men who insist on fighting every damn time i'm on the train

9. stop the as.s.wipes from walking up and down the train prattling on about god. they're not doing their religion a service, they're scaring people away from their religion because they come across as complete nutjobs.

10. stop the as.s.wipes from spitting (yeah, they spit on the trains too), littering, throwing around the free newspapers, and generally being disgusting cretins.

11. stop the as.s.wipes from walking up and down the train, putting the small advertising cards and paper in the corner of every paid advertising board ... if they want to advertise, they should pay for it like everyone else.

12. stop the blind, disabled, poor, et al from walking up and down the carriages looking for hand outs (don't criticise me for saying that, i'm as guilty as the next person for emptying my pockets of change and giving it to them)

enough of the reverse sexism crap ... and cut all the other stupid crap that happens on the trains.

2 guards walking together for every 4 or 6 carriages ... end of problem.

Will they let me ride those cars if I carefully explain to them that I'm really a lesbian trapped in a man's body?

On serious note:
I believe Japan's had this policy for years and it's considered a "safe" country other than for the sexual harassment against women.

And I'm certain that I'm boneheaded enough to accidentally get into one of these cars eventually and look/feel like an ass.

This is a good point; I read somewhere that gropers and flashers really do turn into rapists at some point. Driving them out into the street instead of catching them...ahem...red handed on the subway would just increase the chance that a bustable grope would turn into a rape.

Superdave, I'm a guy so I'm not 100% sure, but I think that most of the groping would go on during rush hour when people are crushed so close together that they're already uncomfortably close anyway, and most importantly other commuters couldn't see what's going on.

Good luck trying to get your guards to walk through all the carriages then.

You have got to be kidding me. In one of the largest cities in the world that is dreaming of the world. This will look too backward to many visitors. Why not be able to be all one big mass in one of the most massively populated cities? Guess Korea has to respect it's women from being harassed by soju'd up horny and desperate adjoshies. I thought that Korean men would be more respectful and protecting of their women than that as for sexual harassment being such a problem. I just didn't think they would do that, even drunk late at night, but apparently they do. Those adjoshies are killing me now; I felt it and knew it that many adjoshies are downright rude during my trips to Seoul as I actually had a few start trouble with me in the subway. I am male and so many acted like they wanted to start a fight while they would push around females during people movement events.

Instead of segregating the women and looking arse backwards, maybe the police need to crack down on how rude some of those adjoshi men are acting on the subway, but it is not my call. I thought they were droves of very rude men on the subway which made me uncomfortable about going to Seoul to be honest. Rude adjoshies men are one major reasons why I wouldn't live in Seoul. They are everywhere, but usually don't act so bad outside of Seoul and I hope they don't ever get that bad. Yucky soju'd up chain smoking men need to quietly take a taxi home and go to bed. It's OK to drink and smoke and like women, but act like a mature and responsible adult for society's sake.

Segregate the women? That is nutz. I say, fix the problem instead of putting a child minded band aid on it.
