The Exorcist (Uncut version)
The Exorcist: The new beginning
Hostel
Blair Witch Project - I remember seeing this and not knowing it was fake. I was even following the propaganda on the net. Man...I was like WTF? |

"Best" or "scariest"? If "best" ...
Psycho. It's so well done, high-class, and ahead of its time it almost doesn't count as a horror movie.
The original Halloween, by John Carpenter, was very effective at scaring with suspense and dread, and actually, very little blood. |

Another vote for the Thing, Alien(s), The Shining & the Exorcist. The novel of "The Shining" was even better than the movie, with a whole bunch of other stuff going on..
I used to be terrified by the old b&w tv series 'Outer Limits' as an 8 year old. It was remade in the 90's. Others:
The Silence of the Lambs
The Amityville Horror
Night of the Living Dead
The Omen (Damian)
Carrie
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The Sixth Sense
Wolf Creek
Jurassic Park & Terminator are crossover to sci-fi, with some horror. Both were good though.

Joe Dante's the Howling is a great movie. If nothing else, it's hard to go terribly wrong with a werewolf in a porno theater. For another example of such a heavenly combination, see American Werewolf in London.
Romero's Dawn of the Dead still rubs me the right way, although I can't precisely identify why I'm so fond of it, nor can I explain why I found Day of the Dead to be cool as well.
Overall, though, I'd have to say that my favorite horror/sci-fi film would have to be the Thing (the 1982 version, not the one with the bald plant-man that moved quite sluggishly). The first time I saw the kennel sequence, it scared/disturbed the shit out of me. |

Neither of which are Horror films, but both endings freaked me right out.
"Spoorloos", a classic Dutch film, which was remade into "The Vanishing" (don't even bother).
And "Angel Heart". Maybe Mickey Rourke's last great role. |

Definitely The Shining, it's just a cool movie all around (and it's Stanley Kubrick for christsake). The Exorcist was pretty damn disturbing when I first watched it (I was young).
I've only seen the original Saw, but it was pretty twisted
Basically though, I find the Japanese horror movies the scariest. Audition, Cure, Ringu, etc. |

I saw this in the theater when it first came out. I was 17 years old and very much into horror movies, as most 17 year olds were (are). It totally blew me away and became my favorite movie of all time. So relentlessly scary. My friend almost cried. He said, "Why didn't we go see Bambi instead?" I haven't seen it in over 20 years. I should probably keep it that way, beacause I have a feeling seeing it now would ruin it for me. |

Amityville was pretty scary in it's time. And the book was pretty scary, too.
Jaws is great. I never get tired of it.
Recently, I'd have to say Hostel (because of the concept), The Ring (had it's creepy moments, but not all there), The Descent (good concept and the end was good and chilling)...
The Shining? I guess so. I won't ever watch it again. Great the first time.
Alien and of course The Exorcist and Halloween. Maybe the original Elm Street.
The orignial Friday the 13th was scary, but I saw it when I was 10 or something at the drive-in.
Not an Omen fan.
Salem's Lot was a great book, but the movie was made for TV and it was laughable.
American Werewolf in London freaked me out at the time, but I was young when I saw that, too. |

A Nightmare on Elm Street messed me up when i was a kid, my ass of an older step brother used to let me watch them late at night, had some crazy dreams..
As of now though i think the asian horror scene is the most disturbing, A Tale of Two Sisters freaked me out when the damn ghost never vanished when she closed then re-opened her eyes..
At the minute i'm watching 1960's Horror Hotel..never seen before so cant really say anything about it yet.. |

| Oh did anyone mention American Werewolf in London? The bit with the Nazi zombies was pretty intense. And going back even further, Altered States (man in an isolation tank becomes an ape and has weird religious iconic sex in tank induced visions). |

I remember The Fly scaring the pants off me what I was about 7.
Alien was definitely a freaky one.
More recently Event Horizon was fairly twisted/spooky. |

But the only movie I remember that freaked me out and I won't watch ever again is the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It's not the blood, it's something that I can't quite put my finger on... |
I watched that with a bunch of mates at my friends 12th birthday slumber party. His mum had gone out and left his 16 year old brother in charge of us, the other video we watched was a porn. Good times! |

| I saw a french horror movie in a dvd bang where the killer was a girl with a split personality so we see the movie from two perspectives kinda thing. It was quite freaky and a good twist but i can't remember the name. |
