OK, I decided to venture out last night and ran into a very scary (for me) situation.
Hof 1: Had some Cass, listened to Korean singers doing really bad early 70's songs (anyone here remember "seasons in the sun"?).
Hof 2: More Cass, nothing remarkable remembered.
Hof 3: Was a little drunk at this point, and it was 2 AM. I walk in and see a mom, dad and son to my right, the son looked to be 13-15 I would guess. For the next 2 hours I had the pleasure of hearing the father yell and scream at his son about lord knows what ( I do not speak Hangul).
Keep in mind I entered the Hof at ~ 2 AM, I guess it's OK to take your kids out that late to humiliate them in public here....
I tried a few times to ask the assho.. oops, father what was going on and got some really nasty looks. At one point he went out to piss so I followed him up to the toilet and tried to speak with him but he was obviously not wanting to talk to a waygook (sp?)
After one hour of seeing him berate his son I stood up and started calling him an ass_hole, pr_ick etc and he began yelling back in Hangul, was great fun really.
At around 4 AM the mom and son left and the father was joined by an older guy and they proceeded to have a bang up evening, I left shortly after.
Is it considered OK to humiliate your children here in public (and take them to bars at 3 AM?)? Was my experience unusual?

I cringed a little bit when I read the OP.
What makes it your business? Was he just shouting at him? Can you imagine a stranger telling you how to treat your children? You couldn't even communicate with him.
I'd say it'd be better to keep well out of it unless someone is really in real physical danger.
It's none of your business.

Yes, he was shouting at him for over two hours and I do agree with you about telling someone else how to treat/raise their children but this really was a fooked up situation. And I am asking if it is normal here to take CHILDREN to a bar at a very late hour and berate them.... |

I agree with you that the OP should've minded his own business.
But you shouldn't criticize what people do in their free time, whether it's 4pm or 4am, since it's his own business. |

Going by the fact that you considered this to be a very unusual situation then you should be able to surmise that no, it is not normal. Why do you have to ask. And if I were to berate my child back in the US and some drunk dude comes up to me non hable englais and started in on me with some goobledegoop, he'd get kicked down the stairs for not minding his own damn business. Think on that. |

Actually I do not live here and the question of whether it is normal here to humiliate your children here in public was an honest question...
I really do understand that I should have minded my own business, but the way this guy was going on and on and on, at a VERY loud level seemed to make it my business. Seriously, you could have heard him from a block away.... |

If you have no idea what it's about and the parents aren't being overly physically abusive then stay the hell out of it. Yes, it is a bit strange for a parent to go off for that long in public. What's perhaps more unusual for Korea, actually, is that the father blew his top so badly for so long without hitting the boy. Just one hour ago I got to see a row of six girls who tried to skip class getting bonked on the head, caned on the hands, made to kneel on the floor, and then get bonked on the head with a stick again right in front of my desk. In that respect the boy might be rather lucky. Maybe the boy got in trouble with the police or stole something. While berating a kid for so long might be rather pointless if the kid had done something really bad he may be lucky not to have received even worse if he has really strict and demanding parents. |
