I just saw a Korean co-worker puncturing a pressurized container (air-freshener, I think) and was fearing for my life, awaiting the impending shrapnel.
I pointed out the label on my asthma inhaler that states 'Pressurized container. Do not puncture or burn even when apparently empty' and she pointed out a Korean label on her bottle that apparently said 'Puncture when empty'.
What is going on? I heard the air escaping from the container and wonder what would have happened had there been a spark or a bigger hole.
Please enlighten me. |

Puncture when empty. Hahah. I love it. Please take a picture of the bottle and post it so we can confirm the translation. |

I was sitting in one of the stalls at a festival when I smelled gas. I looked behind me and a korean guy punctured one of those gas cans they use in the gas stoves. The can was empty but there was enough gas to make me gag and walk out of the tent. Well there was enough gas to cause a nice ball of fire if there was an open flame nearby. He then jumped on the can to flatten it for recycling. |

In the hope of posting a pic of one of these bottles, I picked up an air-freshener in the office and asked to see where it says 'puncture when empty'.
Sadly, this bottle advised users not to puncture it (the wiser decision, I think).
I will work on a photo, but current attempts at making the writing clear enough to read have failed. The hangul looks like a blue blur.
I hope you don't ride that bus that stops at the fuel station...best of luck, if you do. |

That's nothing. Ride the Jecheon-Daegu express bus. Before we get on the freeway, the bus almost always stops at a gas station because they don't think to refuel beforehand. I have seen drivers with a lit cigarette in their mouths while pumping, or even in the hand they use to hold the gas nozzle in the tank. I wonder when there is going to be a tragedy. |
Actually, gasoline won't ignite at the temp of a cigarette. You can extinguish a cig in gasoline, even. I did it once to freak out my sister. |

True, but the fumes certainly will ignite at probably a temp even lower than a lit cigarette. It's still a risk I wouldn't take. |

I'm surprised people aren't killed on a daily--hourly!--basis by the motorcyclists driving around with the compressed gas cylinders on the back of their seats. That's an uncontrolled missile just waiting for a launch.
And, yet, all over the country, I see these big signs proclaiming, "안전 제일!" Yeah, right. |

That's right. A friend of mine used to pump gas while smoking. There's no danger. A burning cigarette isn't an open flame. |

Oh they will ignite at that temp, they just won't light without an open flame.
Ignition temp of Gasoline is low. About 200 degrees C.
A coal is about 500 to 700 C.
You can throw a smoke in a pile of gas and it won't light. That's special effect B.S. Stick a little piece of paper on the end and you'll have a whole other story.
Oh and cars don't explode if you shoot them or if they crash. More B.S. |

actually, when i was a kid, i was something of a pyro. well not REALLY! just a closet pyro. one time, I ignited my entire concrete back porch on fire with a gallon of gas and a match. I was albe to disignite it with, not a hose and water, but with a blanket. Trying to spray it was water was something of a catalyst for more mayhem as it seemed to spread the gas and flame around even more... Anywya, I was going to say that it was a real BITCH to ignite it! I using a mere match wasnt enough. I had to go get my mom's candle lighting lighter to do the job. I think its different when gas is mixed with air.. like in a car engine igniting... then its much more flmaable. |
