Makkoli is wonderful, delicious and cheap.
However today I just bought some makkoli, and according to the date on it, it expired one month ago.
'Traditional style' makkoli comes in an unsealed bottle; if it is old it has just fermented more and so is probably stronger than it should be. However this is the modern factory style stuff in a sealed bottle. It tastes kind of sour. So:
(1) Is it safe to drink?
(2) Does the slightly sour taste mean that it is less, or more alcoholic?
(3) Why the hell is month expired makkoli on sale? |

I've changed my mind. It doesn't taste 'a little sour', it tastes like the afterbirth of a lemon+cottage cheese half-aborted disaster covered in a sojjued up adjossis puke. I was thinking about taking it back, but (1) It's only W1,000 a bottle and (2) I'd have to do it tomorrow because the store is closed now. It's not worth it. This is the most disappointing day of my life (I've had an easy life).
I think I'll go all the way over to the stupid expensive 24hr store and buy a beer instead. |

Usually they put an expiration date on things for a reason, but it's South Korea so there is no telling. |

Ditch it? That would be a WASTE!
Does anyone have any recipes for sour makkoli? Recipes for sour milk are easy to find on the internet; you can make all kinds of things. But does anyone have a recipe for sour makkoli? Surely I can make something with it.. |

Come here and try and drink 1/3 of a bottle. Then drink another third. If you're not regretting my dare by then you can probably down a bottle of warm gin in a "oneshot!"and say it tastes "delicious". I am not a fussy drinker, but I'm telling you this stuff is RANCID like a curdled smegma-bear bile-elephant gut- cat sh,it and lime travesty of a drink (with fizz!). Think Commander vodka + sour milk but worse.
So, any recipes? |

Try making Beef Stroganoff with it. Substitute the makkoli for the sour cream. Just take a couple of shots of soju to numb your tongue before eating.
And yes, I can see where getting a bottle of sour makkoli would make for a major disappointment in life.
PS: Advice. Up-grade your drinking to soju. It never goes bad and is the same price. |

I might try making some kind of stew..
Your other advice though: When I bought it, the shopkeeper said to me "Ahhhh Makkoli!" and I said "Yes, do you like it?" and he said "Yes, I really like it but I hate soju, makkoli is delicious" (this is translated from Korean by the way). So now I feel I shouldn't drink soju or HIS makkoli anyway, the barstard.
Anyway, when you drink soju, is it straight? If you have a mixer then it's more expensive than makkoli... |

Yep,just try another shop with a quicker turnover of product.
I used to like Sansachun but I had a couple of off bottles and now it's ruined for me.
Makkoli is a good drink.Try and find the noryongji(burnt rice)makkoli, that's some good stuff. |

The stuff in the white bottles is hit or miss regardless of the date. If you can find it try the stuff in the clear blue bottles Seoul Makoli
Another option is to find one of the nice folk restaurants and have Makoli or Dong Dong Ju. With Pajeon (Korean Pancake)
The best Makoli is Pocheon Makoli. I saw an ajjoshi selling this outside Seoul famous punk club Skunk Hell in Hongdae. Racetraitor knows the scene. Next time there's a show you can enjoy punk rock with Makoli. |

i agree that makkoli man of hongdae's makkoli is the best - but i've never seen the exact same bottle sold at stores. i've seen the same company (e-dong rice wine) but same product it ain't. i'm always disappointed when i leave skunk hell/hongdae without a bag of five bottles in tow. that means the makkoli man didn't find me.
it really is perfect - not too sweet, not at all chalky, not overly carbonated.
the green bottles that are everywhere are OK, but a bit too sweet and too soda-poppish for me.
anyway, i just wonder if the stuff is considered healthy? i've heard from koreans it is, but i feel like i'm drinking dessert sometimes. |
